Thousands flock to downtown Turlock for annual parade

Maybe it was the array of lights on every float, person or car? Perhaps it was the funnel cakes, kettle corn or Santa up on the fire truck? Regardless the reason, roughly 30,000 people gathered in the heart of downtown Turlock Friday night for the 37th annual Downtown Christmas Parade, hosted by the Turlock Firefighters Local 2434.

ACT GIVES BACK

The Advancing Children of Turlock club took 35 local children on a shopping spree at Target on Wednesday. The club members focused on buying the children coats, shoes and warm clothes for the cold winter season. At the end of the shopping spree, the kids received a hot meal and a visit from Santa.

Mary and Joseph seek shelter in Gold Rush town

For over 30 years, the community of Columbia has come together each December to present their unique take on Las Posadas. The original Spanish holiday tradition re-enacts the biblical story of Mary and Joseph's search for shelter in Bethlehem on the original Christmas Eve. In Columbia, as Mary and Joseph seek shelter they encounter gold mining shepherds, saloon tenders and 1850's fire fighters, along with a host of more traditional angels.

Like father, like sons on Dad's High Sierra hike

For a middling fisherman like me, a nibble in a backcountry lake is a big deal, especially the first one after eight days on the trail. I eagerly reeled in the hook I had cast into the high-elevation lake beneath Isberg Peak in southeastern Yosemite, only to feel the line abruptly stick. My sinker had lodged beneath a rock on the lake bottom.
