Adult school reaches out to community leaders
Turlockers who drive down Colorado Avenue on a daily basis probably do not even notice the Community Continuum College. The building sits so far back on the property that, despite large letters on the front of the building, it is easy to miss from the street. The physical isolation of the building reflects the relative obscurity of the school in the Turlock community.
STEPPIN’ TO THE BEAT
The Turlock Steppin Pards danced the night away at their Hootenanny on Friday. The evening started out with rounds and progressed into squares. Dancers each brought a can of food for the "hobo stew," a meal made of whatever vegetables and canned goods the dancer brought, and eaten out of a can.

Campers at the Turlock Nursery School enjoyed a break from the summer heat this week with a "water fun" themed week of day camp. Kids slid down the zip-line in the back yard of the Turlock Nursery School on Friday while others painted sea-themed decorations during the arts and crafts portion of the camp. Pie contest sweet deal for bakers and USF
As the opening day of the Stanislaus County Fair draws close, so does the annual Apple Pie Contest. Each year local bakers put their talents to the test hoping that their pie earns top honors, while also giving back to the community. Each pie contest entrant is required to bake two pies - one for the judges and one to be given to the United Samaritan Foundation's Daily Bread trucks which serve a free lunch to those in need.

The California tobacco tax funds many programs aiming to create smoke-free environments. In Stanislaus County, the DMC Foundation received state grant funding to operate the Fresh Outdoors Project, which is designed to decrease tobacco exposure were people live, work and play. Local girls joined millions of others across the country this week in celebrating a century of Girl Scouts. Groups rally support to renew library tax
The push to keep local libraries funded will begin in earnest next week as the Save Stanislaus Libraries campaign kicks off. Bingo hall reopens after 2011 fire
CERES – Bingo games resumed in Ceres Friday evening after months' worth of repairs were completed to the fire-damaged Assyrian Club of Urhai bingo hall. California's 2011 crush totaled 3,874,146 tons, down 3 percent from the 2010 crush of 3,986,314 tons. Red wine varieties accounted for the largest share of all grapes crushed, at 1,920,036 tons, down 6 percent from 2010. The 2011 white wine variety crush totaled 1,426,905 tons, down 7 percent from 2010. Tons crushed of raisin type varieties totaled 372,551, up 36 percent from 2010, and tons crushed of table type varieties totaled 154,653, up 25 percent from 2010.
