Turlock remembers 9-11

The Turlock fire and police departments hosted a remembrance ceremony on Sept. 11 in recognition of the lives lost during the terrorist attack in 2001. During the event, Turlock Mayor Gary Soiseth reflected on the events of 9-11 and how he was affected by it. Soiseth said he would be in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday and would go visit the Pentagon Memorial to pay his respects to the 184 individuals who were killed at that site on Sept. 11, 2001. Young Eagles fly at Turlock Airport

The Turlock Regional Aviation Association hosted the Young Eagles event on Saturday at the Turlock Municipal Airport. The program, sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association, gave 102 children between the ages of 8 and 17 the opportunity to take a ride in an airplane.

Veterans donate shoes to foster youth

Local veterans Bob Russell and Wardee "Gunner" Bruce, both active in Turlock's American Legion chapter and Veterans of Foreign Wars post, purchased 53 pairs of Converse Chuck Taylors from Famous Footwear Friday morning, which will be gifted to foster children in need. The American Legion and VFW donated a combined $2,000 to the cause, orchestrated by Russell after he noticed a considerably empty donation bin for foster youth located inside Mattress Firm.

Know Your Neighbor: Tami Truax

Tami Truax is the principal at Cunningham Elementary School and has served as an educator within Turlock Unified School District for over 30 years. In addition to her day job, she also serves on the Turlock Chaplaincy Board and assists with other non-profit groups. After growing up in the Bay Area, Truax continued her education first at Stanislaus State, where she received her bachelor's degree and teaching credential, and then at St. Mary's College, where she earned her master's degree. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her parents and two sons.

Curing cancer with cannabis focus of upcoming class

In 2010, Turlocker Dennis Hill received terrible news. The biochemist had been diagnosed with aggressive, Stage III adenocarcinoma – prostate cancer. He considered his options from radiation to chemotherapy, but after reading a published study which detailed the use of cannabis to treat inoperable brain cancer in humans, he decided to try the alternative therapy.
