Fundraising competition seeks best punch recipe

The holidays are a joyous time for many, but for those battling addiction, the celebratory season can often make them feel alienated and lonely. To help make Christmas enjoyable for all community members, staff at Prodigal Sons & Daughters are hosting an alcohol and drug free event that everyone can participate in, and even adds a little bit of competition to the holiday while raising funds for the local nonprofit.

JUMPING FOR ST. JUDE’S

The Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Stanislaus State was able to raise $150 for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in just one day this week during their annual "Jump for Jude" event, which saw members of the fraternity jump on a trampoline in the campus quad for 32 hours straight Nov. 29 – Nov. 30. TKE brothers, like Cristhian Gonzalez pictured, jumped continuously in shifts that are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis, with the trampoline's springs creaking throughout the night. While they jumped, the fraternity members asked students for donations.

Quilting with kindness

The quilting group at the Turlock Senior Center made winter much warmer for those in hospice care Wednesday afternoon, when they donated 18 handcrafted quilts to Covenant Care Hospice.

Know Your Neighbor: Steven Nascimento

Born and raised in Turlock, Steven Nascimento served on the Turlock City Council from 2012-2016. Prior to joining the Council, Nascimento spent his career working as an urban planner and served as the District Director for Congressman Dennis Cardoza and State Senator Anthony Cannella. The son of Portuguese immigrants, Nascimento is the founder of the non-profit California Portuguese American Coalition, and serves as a member of the board for the Center for Portuguese Studies at California State University, Stanislaus.

Golfing for a good cause

The inaugural golf tournament benefiting Jessica's House took place on Oct. 9, and the event's planning committee was hoping to raise at least $20,000 for the grief support center. On Monday, Michael Everett, Mark Kirkes, Jim Heller, Dianna Bettencourt, Susan Quigley, Robin Swartz and Kenny Fisher were able to present the center's executive director Erin Nelson and EMC Health CEO Linda Stuhmer with a certificate representing more than double that amount. Libraries spark imagination with December literary, crafting events
