Superheroes take over Turlock

Bad guys didn't have a chance on Saturday as superheroes of all kinds gathered in Turlock to run a mile or two for a good cause. The Advancing Children of Turlock club hosted its 2nd Annual Act Like a Superhero Fun Run at Donnelly Park, allowing comic book fans of all ages (and species as there was a doggie dash too) to display their inner hero. Proceeds from the run will go to fund ACT's annual shopping spree for kids in need, as well as a number of local nonprofits serving children.

Turlock athletes shine at Special Olympics

The 44th annual Regional Special Olympics held Saturday at John F. Kennedy School in Modesto was an exciting event for all of the athletes who competed, but for Ellie Brown it was an especially meaningful day. The 26-year-old Turlock resident and key athlete of the Stanislaus team celebrated a major milestone - her 10th year participating in the Special Olympics program.

Under new ownership, Vintage Lounge to transform into wine bar

In downtown Turlock, visitors can find plenty of country music, cold beer, dancing and cocktails, but where can they go to find a nice glass of Merlot? Noticing this missing piece in the city's nightlife, The Udder Place owners Jerry Powell and Shayne Heine recently purchased Vintage Lounge and Piano Bar, hoping to bring a bit of wine country to Main Street with their new bar, Grand Cru.

Fallen officers remembered at annual ceremony

One year ago, 15 names of Stanislaus County peace officers who died while on duty were etched in the granite memorial at Lakewood Memorial Park. When the annual Peace Officers Memorial ceremony was held on Wednesday, there was a 16th name – that of slain Stanislaus County Sheriff Deputy Dennis Wallace added to the ranks.

The Central Park Evening Market brought vendors and patrons alike to Downtown Turlock during its grand opening Thursday night. As local band The Nines performed in the middle of Central Park, shoppers like Darci Viss stocked up on fresh strawberries. In addition to fruits and vegetables, there were also items such as wine, preservatives and jewelry available for purchase along with food trucks for hungry patrons. The market also provided entertainment for children in the form of a bounce house and a cookie decorating station, where Turlockers Aubree Carillo and Leona DeLeon passed the time.

The fifth-grade students at Cunningham Elementary got to put their U.S. History lessons into action on Thursday during the school's annual Pioneer Day. Cunningham fifth-grader Giniva Diaz washes her socks during while fifth-grade teacher Reid Volk is a good sport and allows his students to try and rope him. The students learned how animals were utilized during the Pioneer era and how they were cared for.
