Turlock embraces ‘Bee Positive’ attitude

Over 500 people showed up Saturday to the third annual Bee Positive 5k Run/Walk. The event was put together by Joe and Cathie Bernardi to honor the memory of their late daughter Kayla Bernardi, who passed away in March 2015. Kayla was born with Down-Syndrome and had heart problems and various open-heart surgeries at a very young age. Although Kayla endured a lot during her years she always remained very positive. Know Your Neighbor: Oscar Avila

Turlock resident Oscar Avila has been involved in the city's grocery scene for the past 40 years, the last 21 of which he has spent at Cost Less Market on West Main Street. As store manager, he has helped the community find groceries while contributing to a thriving downtown economy. Along with being an active member of the business community, Avila prides himself in civic participation and attends every Turlock City Council meeting.

Know Your Neighbor: Jerry Powell

Central Valley born and raised, Turlock resident Jerry Powell has made a name for himself in the city through his work in real estate, construction and development and thanks to downtown nightlife destinations The Udder Place and The Grand Cru, which he co-owns. The businessman served in the Marine Corps from 1988 to 1992, and is a Stanislaus State alum. Powell also gives back to the community through his work on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, where he has served for close to 20 years.
