Local advocates push for State of Jefferson

A group of California residents are fed up with unfair representation within the state's government, which they say has led to excessive regulations and over taxation throughout northern counties. The group, a grassroots effort known as the State of Jefferson, hope to create a new state from Northern California to combat these issues, and local advocates hope that Stanislaus County will join the cause.

The bird, the bunny and the wardrobe

A few minutes before 4:30 p.m., the contestants are lined up on fold-out tables topped with a soft fabric. They are all dressed in a variety of outfits and ready to be judged based on three criteria: cutest, most creative and best representation of the fair theme, Imagine the Fun. Most of the contestants sit patiently with their owners, but a few flounder on the table and one even tries to jump off and escape.

Student housing fills as semester approaches

Move-in day at The Vista, Turlock's newest student housing option, is still a month away, but the apartment complex is nearly at full capacity. Such is the case with other complexes surrounding Stanislaus State, with more students opting to forgo dorm life for a taste of the real world.

Jessica Irish is the communications and brand manager for the Center for Human Services. She also has her own business, Jessica Chang Consulting, helping professionals build confidence in their communication and public speaking skills. Since moving to Turlock, she has also become involved the Turlock Young Professionals and is on the Turlock Certified Farmers Market Board of Directors.

Know Your Neighbor: Candace Gonsalves

Candace Gonsalves and her husband, Matt, started Rustic Metal Designs back in 2010, because they wanted to create unique custom metal pieces for family and friends and it grew into a full-time family business. Gonsalves is also part owner of Farm House in downtown Turlock. She and Matt were married on Cinco de Mayo five years ago and they have two beautiful kids, Mattie (4) and Gavin (2).
