Snowy destinations abound in Yosemite winter

As we gazed over Tuolumne Meadows and countless snowy pinnacles, we saw not a soul and scarcely a sign that people had ever been there. It was hard to believe we were in one of the world's most popular parks, visited by millions every year. Two friends and I carefully hiked the final steps over rock and ice to reach a patch of bare granite on the 9,450-foot summit of Lembert Dome. An amazing view from the peak rewarded our effort.

Rainfall continues to surpass historical averages for region

Turlock residents are gladly adjusting to the downpour of rain throughout the area, with recent precipitation amounts exceeding the average rainfall amount since the 1930s and bringing much-needed relief to a drought-stricken region.

Knights support pregnancy center

The Turlock Pregnancy Center shows off its new sonogram machine donated by the Knights of Columbus during tours of the facility given on Sunday. The Turlock, Hughson, Newman, Ceres and Patterson councils also provided the patient table, desk and chairs as well. The sonogram machine was donated on Aug. 12, 2015, and has since been used for patients and training. Sunday's event was an open house to celebrate the new equipment and the services the Turlock Pregnancy Center has to offer including free diapers, clothing, formula and other baby items, along with support for women facing crisis pregnancies.

Summit to explore mentoring impacts in Central Valley

With over 20 school-aged children currently taking advantage of mentoring programs at Sierra Vista Child & Family Services, the organization is hoping to increase that number following a summit on Friday that will raise awareness and advocate for the importance of mentoring throughout the region.
