Sewing to mend the soul

To celebrate the first day of spring, students of Pitman High's home economics fashion class collaborated with the Kiwanis Club of Turlock for the 11th year in row to donate hand-made dresses to the Salvation Army. On Friday afternoon, the students presented their creations to Major Debi Shrum of the Turlock Salvation Army.

County unemployment rate sees gain

Families affected by current immigration laws, farm workers and community leaders are set to march on Sunday in a continuing effort to urge lawmakers to pass a new immigration process that would allow the estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.to legalize their status.

Local runner Chrissy Cole prepares for first marathon

Over a thousand contestants, from as far as Hong Kong to as local as Turlock, have signed up to strut their stuff this weekend at the annual Surgical Artistry Modesto Marathon. The event consists of a 5K run, and a half and full marathon. One applicant in particular is looking to fulfill her dreams of finishing her first full marathon.

RISING IN THE RANKS

The Turlock Police Department held a swearing-in ceremony Thursday to recognize the promotion of Jesse Bawcum to the rank of Sergeant. Sgt. Bawcum, pictured here taking his oath from City Clerk Kellie Weaver, has been with the department since 2005. During his time he has been a member of the SWAT team, a field training officer, a range master, and charter member of the Turlock Narcotics Enforcement Team. He has received numerous commendations, including the department's team excellence award.
