Carnegie Lecture Series: Importance of Reading Aloud

The Carnegie Arts Center will present the first of the Fall 2016 Sunday Arts Lecture Series at 2 p.m. Oct. 9. In conjunction with the new exhibition in the Carnegie's main gallery, "Childhood Classics: 100 Years of Original Illustration from the Art Kandy Collection," lectures this fall will cover many areas associated with children's books and illustration art.

Turlock seniors medal in CyberCyle competition

Seniors living at Covenant Village of Turlock continue to cycle and compete their way to better health. In the spirit of the U.S. Summer Olympic Games, 17 residents participated in the community's third, national competition using the CyberCycle, an interactive recumbent bike that uses virtual environments, video game features, group rides, and the spirit of healthy competition to motivate riders. The team competed against 144 other virtual CyberCycle riders at 18 retirement communities nationwide and earned medals for completing individual courses or stage race courses in the fastest times.

Energy services firm seeks business to house stop on 'Electric Highway'

Electric vehicles have become increasingly popular not only throughout America, but specifically in California. With around 250,000 electric vehicles in the state and a projected one million by the year 2020, California-based energy services firm Ricargo, Inc. is spearheading a statewide network of speedy electric vehicle chargers known as the "Electric Highway," and has chosen Turlock as the highway's next key site.

More pickle at Crane Park

Local pickle ball players converged at Crane Park Wednesday to help City of Turlock employees paint lines for two new pickle ball courts. Since Crane Park provides better lighting than the other courts many players go to at Columbia Park, Colin Homer said the intent of the project was to provide an area for local pickle ball players to play during the evening hours. Homer said he and other players have been working with the city for over a year to bring this project to fruition

A sharing of cultures

Iqbinder Randhawa danced with residents during Main West Post Acute Care's Cultural Day. What began as a way for Main West's Indian employees to share their heritage with residents has grown to encompass all of the cultures found at the convalescent home, including Mexican, Spanish, Assyrian, Portuguese and many others.

Spooky crafts, musical story times and Star Wars all part of October library events

There will be plenty of pumpkins, ghosts and monsters at local branches of the Stanislaus County Library in October, in the form of special story times, activities and craft activities.
