The defense attorney for a Turlock man convicted of murder dropped a legal bombshell in court Tuesday morning when he declared himself not competent enough to continue representing his client during the sanity phase of the trial.
A federal judge sentenced Elias Alvarez-Ramirez, 53, of Turlock to 19 years and seven months in prison for conspiracy to grow marijuana and distribute methamphetamine, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
A Turlock firefighter extinguishes flames on the side of Glenwood Avenue in Turlock Thursday afternoon. The fire burned several trees and scorched at least one telephone pole over an area about 100 yards long and 10 feet wide. The fire is believed to have been ignited by a vehicle that caught on fire. It remains under investigation.
