Local business gives teachers money through grant program
Two years ago GDI president Grant Davis started the "Adopt-A-Teacher" grant program. But in two years Davis said he has only received a grand total of two requests for funds.
Learning about space
Walnut Elementary Education Center celebrated "Space Week" this week. Space week started 15 years ago to commemorate astronaut Alan Sheppard's first U.S. manned space launch. Students at Walnut learned about aerodynamics, flight control and design, and rocketry. Fifth grade teacher Bret Sutterley said Space Week is now done in conjunction with California Standardized Testing to loosen up what can be a tight atmosphere on campus.

Before Linda Alaniz became principal of Crowell Elementary School in Turlock five years ago, there was a slight disconnect between parent, teachers and administrators. While the school was functioning, it wasn't doing so at its highest level, according to numerous parents and teachers on campus.
Local students excel at Occupational Olympics
The 26th Annual Stanislaus County Occupational Olympics and Career Exposition was held Wednesday at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock. More than 800 students from county high schools participated in 23 competitive events. In addition to the events 54 business and industry representatives exhibited and spoke to students during the Career Expo.
Turlocker named Middle School Teacher of the Year
Turlock resident Jeanne Hartman, a resource specialist teacher at Empire Elementary K-8 School in Empire, was recently named the California League of Middle Schools' "Middle School Educator of the Year."

Denair Middle School seventh-grade students were big winners at The Stanislaus County Academic Pentathlon, held last Saturday in Modesto. The Pentathlon is a one-day, five-event competition for county seventh and eighth grade students. Traffic safety concern around TUSD schools

The Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees approved a contract with Boston Reed College to offer certification courses next semester in Electronic Health Records System Technologist and EKG Technician through the TUSD Adult School. The National Science Center's Ag-In-Motion truck visited DMS on Wednesday. Ag in Motion is a 53-foot state-of-the-art trailer converted to a lab classroom. Rachel Watts received the highest honor any teacher could earn - and it came from a simple student letter about her efforts. Top spellers earn accolades
Mountain View eighth grader Samuel Kaminski and Denair Middle School seventh grader Zach Ramaley each earned silver medal honors at the Stanislaus County Office of Education Junior High Spelling Championship held Nov. 17 in Modesto. Jocelyn Ramirez, a seventh grader at Mountain View earned a gold medal for her spelling prowess. She placed 14 out of 44 students. Some of the words spelled at the spelling bee were neurasthenia, panacea and osmosis.
Charter schools growing statewide
California charter public schools grew significantly this 2011-12 school year, opening at high numbers statewide, and serving more students and families in both urban and rural areas, according to data released by the California Charter Schools Association. Turlock Junior High School seventh grader Allison Behrens finished sixth overall out of 44 participants at the Stanislaus County Office of Education Junior High Spelling Championship held last Thursday in Modesto. Behrens was a gold medal winner and TJHS eighth grader Colby McCann took home a silver medal. Some of the words spelled from the spelling bee were neurasthenia, panacea and osmosis.

The Stanislaus Military Academy at John B. Allard School in Turlock held a Thanksgiving feast on campus Tuesday - complete with pineapple and bacon turkey. Administration said it was held to promote a family atmosphere amongst cadets, teachers and staff.
Local second graders get up close with season’s favorite bird
Students in Mr. Munoz's second grade class will have a much better understanding of their Thanksgiving turkey this year, thanks to a class field trip to Wellsford Ranch in Modesto.
