State takes $8.2 million from TUSD budget
The Turlock Unified School District already adjusted their budget for the poor economy three years ago, but now new State legislation is reducing school district funding even further.
TUSD takes a bite into nutrition education
Obesity has more than doubled in children from the age of five to 19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This comes as no surprise to parents and teachers who often see children pass up healthy food offered in the lunch room and choose anything with grease or sugar.

Obama’s speech well received by Turlock students
Sitting, waiting, hoping. Students at Turlock High drummed their fingers on desktops and watched the blank overhead projector in their United States history class hoping the Internet would work. "We are just waiting for the president to come on," said U.S. history teacher Mark de la Motte, assuring his students. Two minutes later, the President appeared on the screen and a sigh of relief escaped the students.
Community colleges struggle with higher enrollment and fewer funds
If students at community colleges think the classrooms are crowded now, just wait till they see what it looks like a few years from now. At the same time that state funding for community colleges has decreased, the enrollment is rising at a rapid rate.

Local schools to benefit from tobacco use prevention grant
The Stanislaus County Office of Education recently received $1.8 million in grants for their Tobacco Use Prevention Program from the California Department of Education. This money is to help educate students in sixth to12th grades about the negative health effects of smoking.
Turlock instructor wins big at State Fair
Turlock High agriculture teacher, Chad Russell, won the instructor sweepstakes at the California State Fair in August due to his students' success. All of his ag students won first place at the Fair, which gave their instructor the most points at the end to win his own prize. Russell won a plaque and $150.
Stanislaus dean resigns
California State University, Stanislaus Professor Nael Aly, who has served as the dean of the College of Business Administration for the last two years has resigned his position, according to university officials.

Traffic safety concern around TUSD schools

The Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees approved a contract with Boston Reed College to offer certification courses next semester in Electronic Health Records System Technologist and EKG Technician through the TUSD Adult School. The Health Records Tech class will be online based and the EKG Tech class will be classroom based. The National Science Center's Ag-In-Motion truck visited DMS on Wednesday. Ag in Motion is a 53-foot state-of-the-art trailer converted to a lab classroom. Rachel Watts received the highest honor any teacher could earn - and it came from a simple student letter about her efforts. Top spellers earn accolades
Mountain View eighth grader Samuel Kaminski and Denair Middle School seventh grader Zach Ramaley each earned silver medal honors at the Stanislaus County Office of Education Junior High Spelling Championship held Nov. 17 in Modesto. Jocelyn Ramirez, a seventh grader at Mountain View earned a gold medal for her spelling prowess. She placed 14 out of 44 students. Some of the words spelled at the spelling bee were neurasthenia, panacea and osmosis.
Charter schools growing statewide
California charter public schools grew significantly this 2011-12 school year, opening at high numbers statewide, and serving more students and families in both urban and rural areas, according to data released by the California Charter Schools Association. Turlock Junior High School seventh grader Allison Behrens finished sixth overall out of 44 participants at the Stanislaus County Office of Education Junior High Spelling Championship held last Thursday in Modesto. Behrens was a gold medal winner and TJHS eighth grader Colby McCann took home a silver medal. Some of the words spelled from the spelling bee were neurasthenia, panacea and osmosis.

The Stanislaus Military Academy at John B. Allard School in Turlock held a Thanksgiving feast on campus Tuesday - complete with pineapple and bacon turkey. Administration said it was held to promote a family atmosphere amongst cadets, teachers and staff.
Local second graders get up close with season’s favorite bird
Students in Mr. Munoz's second grade class will have a much better understanding of their Thanksgiving turkey this year, thanks to a class field trip to Wellsford Ranch in Modesto.
