TUSD trustees approve budget, await further state cuts
After months of slashing expenses, negotiating new contracts, and cutting services and programs, the Turlock Unified School District finally has a budget for the 2009-10 school year ... at least for a few weeks.
Retiring teachers honored, voice their appreciation for district
Marsha Memmott has spent the last 30 years teaching English to Turlock eighth graders. She has spent 30 years correcting grammar, grading essays, and explaining when to use "who" and when to use "whom." After all of those years of dedication to Turlock students and their education, Memmott is retiring from her job at Turlock Junior High School.

The Gift of Learning
California State University, Stanislaus Department of Education students, faculty and families donated items to make literacy boxes, which included books, paper, pens, pencils, crayons, rulers, glue, erasers and puzzles. Department of Education Associate Professor Mary Borba and colleague Anne Weisenberg handed out about 108 literacy boxes to Wakefield students in an effort to promote reading and writing over the holiday break. Stanislaus to renovate original science building
California State University, Stanislaus received funding to modernize its original science building, built in 1971. The 51,000 gross square foot Science I building was taken offline when the Naraghi Hall of Science opened at the campus in fall 2007. The building has seen very limited use since that time. MJC restarts search for new president
The Yosemite Community College District will be reopening the position announcement for Modesto Junior College president. The YCCD president selection committee had been considering four finalists for the position and public forums were held with the candidates. According to Chancellor Joan Smith, "based on discussions with the board, we decided to restart the search process in spring 2012." Medeiros teachers go above and beyond for needy students
Teachers, staff and parents at Medeiros Elementary in Turlock teamed up with employees from Winton-Ireland, Strom & Green Insurance Agency to provide 14 needy students a holiday season with warm clothes on their backs. The teachers and Winton-Ireland employees raised $1,400 so each of the children could attend a $100 clothing shopping spree at Kohl's in Turlock, which was held Wednesday evening. Twenty little girls in the Turlock area will soon receive brand new holiday dresses, thanks to the efforts of Anne Cornell's fashion class at Pitman High School. On Tuesday, the dresses were picked up by Major Debbie Hood of the Salvation Army to be distributed during the organization's annual community Christmas lunch. The Dutcher Middle School and Turlock High School girl's basketball programs donated more than 200 coats to the Coats 4 Kids campaign in Turlock. CSU tallies most ever applications
For the third consecutive year, the California State University system has received a record number of undergraduate applications. A total 665,860 applications were submitted by 258,834 potential first-time freshmen, well above last year's mark of 241,166 distinct applicants. Traffic safety concern around TUSD schools
One month ago a 12-year-old girl was hospitalized after being struck by a car in front of Turlock Junior High School. She had darted into traffic and didn't see the car coming toward her. Turlock Adult School introduces new medical field certification classes
The Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees approved a contract with Boston Reed College to offer certification courses next semester in Electronic Health Records System Technologist and EKG Technician through the TUSD Adult School. The Health Records Tech class will be online based and the EKG Tech class will be classroom based.
