Warrior Day cancelled; Binge drinking, violence focus of event controversy

Turlock High student rises above tragedy

From the outside looking in it would appear as though Heather Johnson's story is one of absolute tragedy - but Stephanie doesn't see it that way. At 14 she lost her mother, and last year she lost her father. Both parents led troubled lifestyles that ended tragically. If there was ever a reason for a teenager to give up hope, she certainly had one.

Hilmar kids get gold fever

Students from Elim and Merquin elementary schools had a serious case of gold fever during Gold Rush Day, held this week. Fourth grade teacher Verne Davis said the educational experience is tied into California's fourth grade social studies curriculum. Parent volunteers helped to run the day for more than 150 students.

Family on mission to raise epilepsy awareness

The first time Earl Elementary second grader Calliey Gomez suffered an epileptic seizure her parents thought she might have been choking. They had no idea their daughter was having the first of what would become nightly battles with a form of sleeping epileptic seizures. Every night while she sleeps, Calliey has dozens of twitches and mini-seizures.

TJHS student honored posthumously for courage, positive attitude

Mikaylah Partin was well-known at Turlock Junior High for her warm smile, quick wit and positive spirit. Mikaylah passed away unexpectedly over Christmas break last year due to health complications - but her spirit lives on at the campus.

Cyrus Elia finds the right note for success in music

Cyrus Elia is a 16-year-old sophomore at Pitman High School with a knack, or rather a gift, for music. Recently named one of 16 cellists in California to make the All State Orchestra, Elia attributes his success to his musical family's encouragement and the supportive Turlock Unified School District programs. From pain to philanthropy

Hospital doctors and nurses take care of various patients for a multitude of issues every day, but they rarely have the opportunity to see their patients performing successfully in life once they have left the hospital. After a traumatic experience that left Turlock Christian sophomore McAllister Russell in the hands of the Children's Hospital of Oakland for several weeks, the local student felt it imperative to give back to the people who helped save her life.

DaMarto named finalist for Superintendent of the Year

Turlock Unified School District Superintendent Sonny DaMarto was named a finalist for the 2013 Superintendent of the Year through the National Association of School Superintendents. DaMarto attended a NASS symposium in Southern California in March where he collaborated and discussed key issues and challenges educators face today.
