School district promotes anti-bullying message through music

Students at Julien Elementary School received a musical message about anti-bullying on Friday from the all-girl rock band Banshees Against Bullying. With each and every song performed, the musicians got students up and dancing, while also teaching them about Stop, Walk, Talk bullying prevention procedures.

Students compete for title of THS Idol

Twelve Turlock High School students traded in their backpacks for microphones on Friday in hopes of being crowned the next THS Idol. Emceed by assistant principal Aaron Mello and last year's winner Brenna Larks, the annual event drew in crowds as each student proved that they have what it takes to earn the musical title.

John Adamson: Speller extraordinaire

Ask John Adamson to spell a word in English or Spanish and there's a good chance that he can do it. A Turlock resident and 9th grader enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program at Modesto High School, Adamson already has plenty of spelling bee experience under his belt, including the Central Valley Dual Language Consortium Spelling Bee and the 2014 National Spanish Spelling Bee.

University honor society shines light on censorship during Banned Books Week

The California State University, Stanislaus chapter of the International English Honor Society Sigma Tau Delta, Alpha Mu Xi, is hoping to raise awareness and draw public attention to the issue of censoring books with a series of events planned during Banned Books Week.

Cunningham goes to the pigs

The delighted squeals from both children and pigs could be heard at Cunningham Elementary School on Wednesday morning for the school's "Pig Day." The event, which was spearheaded by the school's second grade teachers, was created to help students better engage with Common Core State Standards.

Grant to allow Turlock Adult School to expand services

Funding for the Turlock Adult School is expected to undergo a few changes, thanks to a generous grant from the Workforce Investment Act, Title II: Adult Education and Family Literacy Act. The grant, which totals to $482,510, will go towards increasing and enhancing Adult Secondary Education, Adult Basic Education, and ESL Civics.

Workshops put focus on understanding mental illness

Turlock Unified School District, in partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will present a series of workshops that will highlight mental illnesses and start a discussion on complex mental health issues. The first one, titled "In Our Own Voice," will provide an introductory understanding of mental illness by featuring speakers who have dealt with or are currently dealing with mental illnesses themselves.
