New Pitman club wants to spread love, hope with blankets

While spring break is often a time designated for relaxation, members of a new club at Pitman High School will be busy assembling colorful fleece blankets to keep children at local hospitals warm - in more ways than one.

Dutcher celebrates biliteracy with inspirational speaker

It's not every day that students are told to be rebeldes, or rebels, but that's exactly what they were encouraged to do Thursday evening by Graciela Tiscareño-Sato, highly-decorated military veteran and award-winning biliteracy author, who told them to rebel against the preconceived notions of what their lives are supposed to look like during Dutcher Middle School's Noche de Inspiracion.

Delhi's Helping Hawks

Members of the Delhi High School Helping Hawks Club donated time to serve dinner at the We Care Shelter in Turlock Thursday evening. The club has donated their help various times throughout the year. The club was established at Delhi High School in 2011 by a student who had an experience at a homeless shelter. The student approached Matt Ward and asked about starting a club. The club started with 11 students, but has grown year after year. The club also helps with community clean ups and child care for district events.

Trustees split on Pitman heating, air conditioning project

The difference of $1 million served as a source of contention for the Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees Tuesday as they disputed two projects aimed at improving the lack of proper heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls in the B-Building of Pitman High School.

Turlock High to welcome new principal

Turlock High School students will welcome a new principal come fall, following the Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees' decision to appoint Gabe Ontiveros to replace current principal Marie Russell, who is slated to take on a new position aimed at improving communication among all stakeholders throughout the District.

Turlock Christian graduate honored as Outstanding Woman in Engineering

Former Denair resident Kristen Temnyk has come a long way since she graduated from Turlock Christian High School in 2012. As a biomedical engineering major at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Temnyk was one of five graduating seniors to be recognized as Outstanding Women in Engineering from the Society of Women Engineers' campus chapter.

Celebrating the Assyrian New Year

As the school with the most Assyrian students throughout Turlock Unified School District, Dennis Earl Elementary School hosted an Assyrian New Year Parade that included a number of festive dances during an afternoon assembly on Friday. Roughly 65 Assyrian students participated in the event, during which they shared information about Assyrian history, food, clothing and dances with their peers. Another 20 local kids from the Church of the East also attended to perform a number of Assyrian dances.

Turlock High NJROTC cadets win national air rifle competition

As the self-proclaimed underdogs during the 2017 Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps (JROTC) National Air Rifle Championship, the fact that the Turlock High School air rifle team was named the best overall team in the nation surprised everyone - including themselves.

A New Era: Ellen Junn inaugurated as 11th president of Stanislaus State

While certainly not a new face to community, Ellen Junn was officially inaugurated on Thursday as the 11th president of the Stanislaus State and the first Korean-American woman to lead a four-year university throughout the United States.

Every 15 Minutes teaches sobering lesson to students

Before this week, Turlock High School couple Sophie Warda and Danny Velasquez's plans to attend college and stay together after they graduated seemed just within reach. On Monday, however, those plans came to a screeching halt when Danny was struck by a drunk driver as part of Every 15 Minutes, a two-day program that shows high school students the real-life consequences of drinking and driving.

Adult Literacy Program seeks volunteer tutors

While the ability to read and write is often taken for granted by many, it is not a guaranteed skill set shared by everyone. With this in mind, LearningQuest's Adult Literacy Program is hoping to recruit more volunteer tutors to help adult students throughout Stanislaus County improve their basic reading and writing skills in order to achieve their individual goals - whether it is earning a high school diploma or getting a promotion at work.

For sisters Clarissa and Kai Bourchier, the Turlock Unified School District Farm represents much more than a plot of land. For the two Pitman High School students, it is a chance to raise their very own farm animal - an experience that living in the city did not make possible for them.

University hopes to spark ‘The New Stan State’ with innovative center

Members of the University Student Union are anticipating that a $52 million renovation plan for a state-of-the-art University Student Center, which is slated to open its doors in 2020, will not only provide necessary resources for academic success at the heart of the university, but also a source of campus pride for all students at Stanislaus State.
