TC’s flurry of shots result in win

DENAIR - For the Turlock Christian High girls soccer players, it was frustrating to see all their shots swerve too far to the left or too far to the right, or into the hands of the opposing goalkeepers. But the Eagles remained persistent, which ultimately led to Monday's 1-0 triumph over Southern League foe and fellow Monte Vista Avenue resident Denair High.

Prep Notebook

Same team, better baseball. Those are the words that represent the Turlock Christian High baseball team and first-year coach Jon Valenti, whose squad played host to Mariposa High on Thursday night at Pedretti Park. Mariposa was last season's Southern League runner-up and the 2008 league champion. The significance? The Eagles looked to snap a three-year losing streak against the Grizzlies, with the last previous win coming on March 28, 2007.

Wheelin’ and dealin’

There's been a lot of talk about what Kevin Kramer means to the Turlock High baseball team this year. He's a junior shortstop destined to play for UCLA in a couple seasons, and he's believed to be the first high school athlete in Turlock history to play for the USA Baseball team. But the Bulldogs aren't one-dimensional.

Pride soccer rolls over Golden Valley

MERCED - All of a sudden, the Pitman High girls soccer players looked up to see something they couldn't stop. It was a ball flying high above their heads from their opponent's top player and toward their goalkeeper.

HILMAR - It's a known fact that a freshman playing on any high school varsity sports team has a little more to prove than the other athletes. In Victoria Whitford's case, the newcomer to Hilmar High girls soccer is willing to do pretty much anything to show that she belongs.

Locals stand out in first big track meet

Nearly 50 high schools and 1,500 athletes competed at the Al Brenda Invitational on Saturday, one of the biggest track and field events so far this season. The event was held at the brand new facility, also named after Al Brenda, at Cal State Stanislaus in ideal spring weather of 76 degrees.

Turlock softball falls to defending league champ

The Turlock High softball team hosted the Central California Conference defending champion Buhach Colony High on Tuesday in what was a showcase of dominant pitching. The game ended in extra innings in favor of Buhach, 1-0.

Ashley Lair is a Pitman High senior who has spent endless hours cheerleading for the school's sports team on top of her duties as a Student Council member. She's petite and greets people with a smile. But behind all this lies quite an ambitious athlete, one who's chasing a feat that no other Pride athlete in track and field has ever done.
