He dominated batters like no other in the Central California Conference, leading the Turlock High baseball team to one its best seasons in recent history in 2010. No one was able to stop Vince Wheeland judging by his 13-0 record, which was the best reported mark in California.

Taking center stage

Recent Pitman High graduate Ethan Alvares played in the 37th Lions All-Star Football Classic at the University of Pacific's Stagg Memorial Stadium in Stockton on Saturday night in front of hundreds of supporters. Alvares, the South's starting center, was the only local player to participate in the prestigious event, as his team suffered a close 15-14 loss to the North team in the final minutes.

With sweat dripping across his face on a warm Friday morning, Ethan Alvares walked off a makeshift practice football field at Cal State Stanislaus with his helmet in hand. He greeted his grandfather - who appeared to be the only spectator in attendance - before grabbing his stuff and leaving.

Locals represented at all-star baseball games

MODESTO - On Saturday, visitors of John Thurman Field purchased programs that read the 2010 Modesto Sunrise Rotary Baseball Classic: 21st Annual High School All-Star Baseball Game. The purpose of the game was to gather all the best high school juniors and seniors from cities such as Turlock, Waterford, Modesto and Denair. Usually, the games aren't meant to be serious.
