MODESTO - Stealing bases, laying down a bunt to help advance a teammate, utilizing the team's speedsters. Those are the little things that were occasionally absent this week for the Pitman High baseball team, with all the misery coming to an end Thursday afternoon at Davis High.

There was a long, dramatic pause before Turlock High midfielder Emily Thompson unleashed a shot her coach would later refer to as "a well-shot ball." Because only moments before that, the dozens of people who sat in lawn chairs while being covered in blankets to stay warm on a cold March day, watched Pitman High's Iatzity Sanchez remained motionless on the Turlock Sports Complex soccer field after a nasty collision.

Thirty-four years ago a Turlock High School sophomore named Scott Ladd gave his heart and soul to the game of basketball. Ladd's life was cut short in a car accident, but his parents wanted to honor his memory and that is how the Scott Ladd Memorial Award came about.
Remember Alexia Moreno? She's the Turlock High sophomore wrestler who crashed the record books like fine China last season. Well, she did it again. After a historic high school wrestling season in which she became the first Bulldog to win a state tournament title before becoming a Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament finalist, her off-season is equally impressive. She competed in the Folkstyle Nationals in Oklahoma City last weekend and placed fourth in the 123-pound weight ...
DENAIR - For the Turlock Christian High girls soccer players, it was frustrating to see all their shots swerve too far to the left or too far to the right, or into the hands of the opposing goalkeepers. But the Eagles remained persistent, which ultimately led to Monday's 1-0 triumph over Southern League foe and fellow Monte Vista Avenue resident Denair High.
Same team, better baseball. Those are the words that represent the Turlock Christian High baseball team and first-year coach Jon Valenti, whose squad played host to Mariposa High on Thursday night at Pedretti Park. Mariposa was last season's Southern League runner-up and the 2008 league champion. The significance? The Eagles looked to snap a three-year losing streak against the Grizzlies, with the last previous win coming on March 28, 2007.
There's been a lot of talk about what Kevin Kramer means to the Turlock High baseball team this year. He's a junior shortstop destined to play for UCLA in a couple seasons, and he's believed to be the first high school athlete in Turlock history to play for the USA Baseball team. But the Bulldogs aren't one-dimensional.
MERCED - All of a sudden, the Pitman High girls soccer players looked up to see something they couldn't stop. It was a ball flying high above their heads from their opponent's top player and toward their goalkeeper.
With an upset over Linden High under its belt, Hilmar High baseball planned on cruising by Dixon High, in a best two out of three series, on its way to the SJS Division V Championship game. Things didn't quite go as smoothly as they hoped, though. Hilmar (17-7 overall) did its job on Saturday with a 6-0 victory over the Rams (13-16 overall), claiming the win with bookend 3-run innings. But Tuesday's matchup ...
The SJS Division I Section Finals were a success for both Turlock and Pitman High. After two days of competition at Elk Grove High, the Bulldogs advanced eight athletes to the Masters Meet Trials and the Pride advanced five. "We were really surprised," Turlock's girls head coach Mike Brown said. "In the last few years we've only taken a couple of kids to Masters." Turlock will be taking four athletes to compete ...
Pitman High was elated at the end of the regular season, winning its first Central California Conference softball championship in school history. The Pride's (16-11 overall) enthusiasm was short lived, however, as Sheldon High (19-9 overall) destroyed their post-season dreams in the first round of the SJS Division I Playoff Tournament, 16-1. The Pride entered Saturday's matchup at the Sacramento Softball Complex full of confidence. For the most part, Pitman' softball squad had ...
Local athletes put in solid performances last week at the SJS Division IV/V Track Finals that were held at Modesto Junior College. Denair High, Turlock Christian High, and Hilmar high each brought athletes to the competition and experienced varying degrees of success. Hilmar walked away with the most success, however, finishing 12th as a team in the girls division and advancing five athletes to the finals of their respective events. Hilmar's Morgan McFaddin ...
Turlock High's playoff run is over. After two emotional, sudden death, post-season victories, the Lady Bulldogs (13-3-7 overall) succumbed to Franklin High of Elk Grove, 1-0, on Thursday in the semi-final round of the SJS Division I Playoff Tournament. A battered and bruised Bulldog team faced off against the Wildcats (18-4-2 overall) shorthanded due to illness and injuries sustained during the quarterfinal matchup with Tracy High. In addition to their personnel problems, Turlock ...
Hilmar High traveled to Dixon High on Thursday, one game away from the SJS Division V Championship game. With a Trans Valley League championship already under their belt, the Lady 'Jackets strived to bring another section title to Hilmar, but in the end it wasn't meant to be. Hilmar and Dixon fought hard in regulation and overtime but it was the Rams who emerged victorious after a penalty kick shootout, 4-2. "We should ...
Hilmar High's baseball team entered the first round of the SJS Division V playoff tournament with a chip on its shoulder. The Yellowjackets (14-7 overall), who ended their regular season with a pair of losses to rival Escalon High, stepped onto Billy Hebert Field in Stockton eager to show Linden High they were true contenders. The Lions (22-5 overall), Mother Lode League Champions and number one seed, were outmatched by Hilmar's pitching and fell ...
Hilmar High entered the SJS Division V softball playoff tournament with high hopes after finishing second in the Trans Valley League. The Yellowjackets (11-8-1 overall) found themselves pitted against Marysville High (23-5 overall) in the first round of the tournament, and for the first couple of innings they played up to those hopes. Unfortunately, the Indians' offense ignited in the third inning, ultimately pressuring Hilmar into defeat, 8-1. "We knew Marysville was going ...
TWB, together we're better. It's written on the wrists of Turlock High's girls soccer team and it's a source of pride and inspiration for the Bulldogs. It can be seen not only on their flesh but in the style of play during any given Bulldog game, and Tuesday's SJS Division I quarterfinal matchup with Tracy High was no different. Like Turlock's previous playoff match, 100 minutes passed without a single goal. For the ...
The reigning Trans Valley League champions, Hilmar High, continued its winning ways on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Calaveras High in the first round of the SJS Division V Playoff Tournament. Building off their undefeated conference campaign, the Yellowjackets struck the Redskins early in the match with their offensive attack. In the 10th minute, Shelby Costa benefited from some luck and skill as a partially deflected ball bounced into Calaveras' goal, putting ...
Coaches can often be heard preaching to their athletes about the importance of details. "It's the little things that count" - a common cliché in high school athletics, but true all the same. On Saturday, during the SAL Track Finals at Joe Debely Stadium, several teams learned this truth firsthand and, for one team in particular, it meant the difference between second place and a championship. "We were definitely expecting first place but ...
Less than a week after defeating rival Turlock High for a spot in the SJS Division I Playoffs, Pitman High's baseball team took an early exit from the tournament after falling to Lincoln High. Tuesday's first round matchup was closely contested but a fifth inning surge from the Trojans (17-9 overall) proved to be too much for the Pride (20-8 overall) to handle. Pitman lost 6-3. Pitman traveled to Lincoln's home field planning ...
It was a tough Thursday for Pitman High's girls soccer team. Just two days removed from a first round playoff win, the Pride fell flat against Enochs High, losing 3-0. Enoch's Mckenzie Moe was responsible for two of the Eagles' goals as well as an assist on Kirsten Coleman's goal. The Pride, who normally exhibits an explosive offense, struggled to find their rhythm early in the match and was taken advantage of by ...
For 100 minutes, Turlock High and Beyer High battled under the lights in Joe Debely Stadium, showcasing a level of competition one would expect from a pair of playoff teams. After netting 6 of 7 penalty kicks, Turlock emerged as the victors, 6-5 over ...
