Hilmar freshman comes through

HILMAR - It's a known fact that a freshman playing on any high school varsity sports team has a little more to prove than the other athletes. In Victoria Whitford's case, the newcomer to Hilmar High girls soccer is willing to do pretty much anything to show that she belongs.

Coyotes jump out to lead, hold on for win

DENAIR - The start couldn't have been more sweeter. Denair High slugger Brian Willis had two runners on base in the Coyotes' showdown against Turlock Christian High on Tuesday afternoon. And on the first pitch that he saw in the game, he swung his bat and the ball went sailing toward the leftfield fence. It was gone. That provided three much-needed runs, but was it enough? The Coyotes didn't think it was, but they still ...

Miss Everything

Ashley Lair is a Pitman High senior who has spent endless hours cheerleading for the school's sports team on top of her duties as a Student Council member. She's petite and greets people with a smile. But behind all this lies quite an ambitious athlete, one who's chasing a feat that no other Pride athlete in track and field has ever done.

Mattos’ short stay at Turlock touched many lives

Ron Cornell spent four decades coaching at Denair High until he called it a career in 2009. He might not have even considered coaching in the first place if it wasn't for Bob Mattos, whose short stay at Turlock High was memorable as he was an assistant coach for the Bulldogs in 1970. That year, they were 10-0. People who were around that team know that Mattos was an important piece to Turlock's success, as ...

Softball Previews 2010

Five different softball teams, five different story lines. There's not a true common theme that's shared among Pitman, Turlock, Turlock Christian, Denair and Hilmar schools when it comes to the softball diamond … except that all want to play well throughout the season, of course. Each team is chasing a certain goal that the respective players and coaches hope to achieve. Let's start with Turlock, which got a taste of the postseason for the first ...

Turlock’s back-to-back wins put them 2-0 in CCC

Turlock High's first league opponent was Buhach Colony High, one of the projected front runners for the CCC title this season. The Bulldogs faced the Thunder Wednesday night at home in a confidence building 62-56 win. "It felt good to get that first league win," Turlock's head coach Doug Cornfoot said. "We came together and played better than we had in the preseason." The matchup was a competitive one; both teams pressed ...

TC, Turlock girls start league strong

The beginning of league play can be a stressful time for teams in the Valley. Although the first couple of games won't break a team's chances at a league title, they can serve as the foundation for future success and indicate what the rest of the season holds. After losing to Buhach Colony High by four points on Tuesday night, Turlock High's girls reversed roles in a four point win over Merced High. ...

Young men often turn to athletics in pursuit of confidence and camaraderie. Some simply want to have fun, but most athletes strive to compete and have a deep desire to win. Erick, a standout linebacker and wrestler for Turlock High, found his ...

CCC title up for grabs

I didn't know what to expect out of this year's basketball season; before December I hadn't watched a high school basketball game for at least four years. I did know that Turlock and Pitman would be in constant competition with each other for bragging rights and that Turlock, as defending CCC champions, would be the team to beat. As I spoke with coaches from both teams before the season began, I got the ...

Pride take second in Ceres tourney

One of Pitman High's goals coming into this year's basketball season was to earn a first place tournament finish before league play began. After finishing 3rd in the Frank Godinez tournament the Pride's last shot at their short-term goal was the Ceres tournament, where they got off to a shaky start. Pitman fell to Modest Christian High in the first round but was able to bounce back, defeating Ceres High 68-50 in the ...
