Hilmar freshman comes through

HILMAR - It's a known fact that a freshman playing on any high school varsity sports team has a little more to prove than the other athletes. In Victoria Whitford's case, the newcomer to Hilmar High girls soccer is willing to do pretty much anything to show that she belongs.

Coyotes jump out to lead, hold on for win

DENAIR - The start couldn't have been more sweeter. Denair High slugger Brian Willis had two runners on base in the Coyotes' showdown against Turlock Christian High on Tuesday afternoon. And on the first pitch that he saw in the game, he swung his bat and the ball went sailing toward the leftfield fence. It was gone. That provided three much-needed runs, but was it enough? The Coyotes didn't think it was, but they still ...

Miss Everything

Ashley Lair is a Pitman High senior who has spent endless hours cheerleading for the school's sports team on top of her duties as a Student Council member. She's petite and greets people with a smile. But behind all this lies quite an ambitious athlete, one who's chasing a feat that no other Pride athlete in track and field has ever done.

Mattos’ short stay at Turlock touched many lives

Ron Cornell spent four decades coaching at Denair High until he called it a career in 2009. He might not have even considered coaching in the first place if it wasn't for Bob Mattos, whose short stay at Turlock High was memorable as he was an assistant coach for the Bulldogs in 1970. That year, they were 10-0. People who were around that team know that Mattos was an important piece to Turlock's success, as ...

Softball Previews 2010

Five different softball teams, five different story lines. There's not a true common theme that's shared among Pitman, Turlock, Turlock Christian, Denair and Hilmar schools when it comes to the softball diamond … except that all want to play well throughout the season, of course. Each team is chasing a certain goal that the respective players and coaches hope to achieve. Let's start with Turlock, which got a taste of the postseason for the first ...

Feaver coaches last game as Turlock polo falls to Oak Ridge

Wednesday marked the last time Steve Feaver would coach Turlock High School's boys water polo team. "It was my last game of water polo," Feaver said. Although the Bulldogs played well, the effort wasn't enough to overcome Oak Ridge High School as they fell 12- 9. The loss eliminates Turlock from the quarterfinals of the Division I Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs and will be remembered as the end of a career that spanned 39 seasons. ...

Davis Sr. sinks Pitman polo

Pitman High School's boys water polo team was unable to overcome second seeded Davis Senior High, losing 16-6 in the quarterfinal round of the Sac-Joaquin playoffs Wednesday at Tokay High School. Pitman's Tyler Jamieson scored in the first quarter, giving the Pride an early lead. The Blue Devils responded immediately however, scoring twice before the first quarter was over. By the time the first half came to a close Pitman had scored two more ...

Pitman breezes through first round

The first two sets were a breeze. As for the third set? The Pitman High volleyball players knew they had to stay cool against a Kennedy High team that wanted to capture just one set before a long drive back to Sacramento. The setback, however, was no big deal for the No. 6 Pride, who overcame two late deficits for the 25-8, 25-8, 25-23 win at the Pitman High gym on Tuesday ...

Pride water polo’s fast start results in postseason win

MODESTO - It wasn't much of a challenge, not because Pitman High boys water polo faced a much lesser opponent. It was just that the Pride made it look that way. "Our guys just came out real hot," coach Drew Clute said. That statement perfectly summed up Pitman's performance against Johansen High, the top seed from the Modesto Metro Conference, in the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Tournament ...

Bulldogs water polo stomp over Modesto, enter today’s quarterfinals

MODESTO - In Saturday's Sac-Joaquin Section Division I opening round match against Modesto High, there was a sequence that made veteran Turlock High boys water polo coach Steve Feaver think, "Oh, wow." It happened near the end of the second period, when the Bulldogs were down two defenders. Usually, when a team is on the defensive, the players give up an easy goal. Not this time. Senior goalkeeper Neil Wraske knocked down ...

Pitman, Turlock, Hilmar football set for playoffs

Last week, the Pitman High and Turlock High football teams produced a Harvest Bowl classic. The game ended in the final seconds in the regular season finale. Pitman celebrated joyously after winning 16-13, while Turlock came together for a somber post-game meeting. But now, it's time to move on. The No. 7 Pride (9-1 overall) will host No. 10 West High of Tracy (6-4 overall) at Debely Stadium on Thursday at ...

Hilmar soccer loses in first round

The Hilmar High boys soccer team fell to West Campus High in Sacramento on Tuesday with a final score of 4-1. Although the Yellowjackets didn't consider West Campus to be that good of a team, they were unable to find their footing until it was too late, scoring their lone goal towards the end of the game off David Alves' foot. Hilmar coach Louie Bettencourt attributes his team's loss to "lots of mistakes," a ...

Pitman, Turlock football trade jabs in recent Harvest Bowls

For the first few years, the main location of the Harvest Bowl trophy was on the Pitman High campus. But for the last four years, it's been moving from place to place like an unstable sports franchise. Truthfully, the owners of the Harvest Bowl trophy don't do too much to the shiny object. Maybe they'll take a picture with it or show it off from time to time. Other than that, it ...
