Turlock golfer makes college decision: Simpson University

When Steve Hammell wanted to pick up golf, his father wasn't quick to hand him gloves, a club and a golf ball. The inspiring golfer had to learn the rules of the game first, and that led to actual playing on the course and golf etiquette.

Softball rivalry highlights Pitman, Turlock pitchers

By definition, a pitchers' duel is a low-scoring affair with the starting pitchers on both sides allowing no more than a run or two. The term was in full display at the Turlock High softball field, where crosstown rivals Pitman and Turlock met for the first time this season. If it weren't for some clever base-running and key hits by the Bulldogs, Thursday afternoon's showdown might still be taking place right now.

Pride baseball blows lead late in game

Fourteen words, 10 seconds, one breath. That was all coach Mick Tate could offer after he witnessed perhaps the most impossible sequence of events in his three decades of coaching. He didn't have many words to say after his Pitman High baseball team blew a five-run advantage heading into the final inning against Merced High on Friday afternoon before allowing eight runs on three hits and three errors to lose 13-10 in the Central California ...

Pitman soccer settles for draw against one of CCC’s best

When it was all over, there weren't too many happy faces along the sideline of the Pitman High girls soccer team. Nor were there sad faces. Players changed their shoes and packed up their stuff after a hard-fought day at the Turlock Sports Complex against one of the top teams in the Central California Conference.

Turlock’s Wheeland earns second no-hitter

MODESTO - By the time the extra inning rolled around, Turlock High ace Vince Wheeland was nowhere near tired. Yeah, his face was sweaty after throwing more than 100 pitches at that point, all while chasing his second no-hitter of the season.

Bulldogs lose starting QB to injury

Sean Downs, the tough and relentless Turlock High sophomore who quarterbacked the Bulldogs to a playoff berth, is out for the season. He fractured his collarbone during last week's 27-24 win over Golden Valley High at Veterans Stadium in Merced. He is unable to play for four weeks. The injury happened in the final 2 minutes of the Central California Conference game, when he sprinted toward the sideline and tried to get ...

With inspired showing by top golfer, Bulldogs take second

MODESTO - Turlock High girls golfer Hannah Gong didn't have her best day at last Monday afternoon's Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South Championships at Creekside Golf Course. This was her first time back on a golf course after spending a week in Indianapolis for the FFA Convention. "She was tired," Turlock coach Mary Krupka said about the team's top scorer, who arrived about five hours before the tournament started. One example ...

Bulldogs not taking Atwater lightly, especially after last year

As he sat on the team bus, feeling rather relieved from another close win, Turlock High football coach James Peterson overheard his players' conversations. He liked what came out of their mouths. "I heard guys talking Atwater High School," he said. He wouldn't have minded if they were discussing last Friday night's 27-24 win over Golden Valley High, in which the Bulldogs won in the final seconds on a Sean Downs touchdown, ...

Pitman focused on always tough Merced before Harvest Bowl

For the first eight weeks of the high school football season, the most a team scored on Pitman High was 24 points. And that was by Buhach Colony High, a state-ranked team chasing back-to-back Central California Conference titles and boasting a couple of highly recruited athletes. Then last Friday night happened. The Pride went up against an Atwater High team that scored 35 points, something the Turlock High football talked about earlier ...

Hilmar, TC volleyball looking to better playoff positions

Besides Pitman, the Hilmar High and Turlock Christian High volleyball squads are also trying to make moves up their respective playoff spots. Turlock Christian is seeded 11th in the SJS Division V Tournament in the latest power ratings, with only the top 12 teams making the postseason. PHS volleyball 3 wins from making history

Three more wins. That's all that's needed for the Pitman High volleyball team to capture the Central California Conference title for the first time in the school's short history - even though the Pride might have to share it. The Pride's three remaining matches seem to be automatic wins, as they have beaten Atwater High, Merced High and Turlock High each twice this season. In addition, they've swept the latter two teams ...

After demolishing Merced, Bulldogs one win from perfection

With his lightning quick speed, Morley Baker won the opening match swim-off to give his Turlock High boys water polo team an early advantage. He then passed the ball to the trailer, who sent it to the middle of the pool to Antovan Davtians. Davtians returned the ball to a streaking Baker on the right side, where he out-sprinted his defender to score a goal just 9 seconds in. "That was a ...

Turlock girls water polo falls to Merced

Against the league's best, the Turlock High girls water polo team fell 11-5 to Merced High on Thursday at the school's Steve Feaver Aquatic Center. For the Bulldogs, it was difficult to stop Merced's Allison Miller, who had a match-high four goals. The Bears (9-0) are just one win away from a perfect season and consecutive league titles after sharing it with the Bulldogs last season. Turlock's Savanna Schaffer finished with a ...

Pitman water polo ready for Turlock

For the Pitman High boys water polo team, this doesn't happen often. The Pride players and coaches are cherishing every moment, as they're experiencing one of their best seasons in school history. For just the third time ever, they're making the playoffs. How impressive have they been? Sure, they still live in the shadow of Turlock High and coach Steve Feaver, but that common sports metaphor isn't that wide and dark ...

Turlock’s Lima falls short in tennis singles finals

MERCED - Turlock High junior Natalia Lima entered this week's Central California Conference Singles Tournament as an unseeded girls tennis player, which was ideal for her. "Underestimation is my best friend," she said. With that attitude, she had an unexpected run through the tournament, knocking off the No. 1 seed - Pitman High's Britney Leon - before losing a tough, three-set battle to Merced High's Charlotte Sofranek, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, in the ...

Bulldogs win golf title — again

MODESTO - Even without their top scorer, the Turlock High girls golfers got it done. Again. For the eighth consecutive time, the Bulldogs captured the Central California Conference title. Their latest trophy-grabbing experience came Tuesday afternoon at Creekside Golf Course, where Turlock outlasted Merced High by 21 strokes (450-471) in the par-72, 18-hole tournament to give the Bulldogs another team appearance at Monday's Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South Championships at the same ...

Pitman volleyball sweeps Turlock in 3

It was nothing to fret about. The Pitman High volleyball team found itself in an unexpected hole, staring at a 7-point deficit in the third game of the crosstown rivalry home match with Turlock High on Monday night. But coach Kristen Pontes called a timeout, which, evidently, fixed whatever problem her Pride had at the moment. After that, the third set was theirs. For the second time this season and fourth time ...

Lima defeated Turlock teammate Jill Temple 6-0, 6-0 in Tuesday's semifinals to get to this point. OT win provides momentum

There were reasons to have their heads down, with the biggest being the fact that the Turlock High football players almost allowed a three-touchdown lead to completely slip away. But the Bulldogs did not partake in the blame game. They stayed composed, even with an opposing crowd surrounding them. It took an overtime to settle the score, as sophomore Sean Downs, beaten and bruised all last Friday night, faked a handoff and charged ...
