Pitman High passed it first test in the Central California Conference Wednesday afternoon when its girls hosted Merced High in the league opener. The Pride overcame the speedy Bears with a second half effort, shutting them out 3-0.
It's called softball, but the ladies of Turlock and Pitman High have been working hard as they prepare for the 2013 Central California Conference season. With pre-season play already in full swing and the beginning of league just a few days away, the Bulldogs and Pride are both building team chemistry and supplying their young teams with invaluable experience; foundations they hope will carry them to a championship and into the post-season.
Turlock High experienced a rude awakening Wednesday night in its Central California Conference home opener against Atwater High. The Falcons managed to do to the Bulldogs what none of the CCC teams were able to do last season-beat them.
Last year Hilmar High's girls posted an undefeated, championship season in the Trans Valley League and earned a playoff berth despite having a fairly young team. Now, the Yellowjackets are back on the soccer field with an aim for another TVL championship and a section title appearance-goals they plan on achieving through experience this time around.
Tennis season is already in full swing in the Valley. Turlock, Pitman, Delhi, Denair, and Turlock Christian High have been hitting the courts, some new and some old, on a quest to dole out defeat to their respective league opponents and make a run at the post-season.
Isaac Bertalotto became the fourth sophomore in Turlock High's history to claim a medal at the California High School State Finals on Saturday. With a tournament record of 5-3 and an 8th place finish, Bertalotto joined the company of Fabian Garcia, Brandon Egleston, and Lewis Gonzales-his cousin-as the youngest Bulldogs to ever place at the State Tournament.
Last year Turlock and Pitman High's girls had a season to remember in the Central California Conference. After a tight, three game series the Bulldogs emerged as undefeated CCC Champions having edged their rivals out of the honor by a single game. Both teams continued playing into the post-season, but while Pitman fell in the first round Turlock orchestrated a memorable playoff run that ultimately ended at the hands of Franklin High of Elk Grove in the Division I San Joaquin Section semi-finals.
Lori Crivelli presented a check to Turlock High boys basketball team captains DaShawn Holcombe and Austin Bush on Friday as part of Crivelli Insurance Services' 3 for $3, a program that pays for each three-point shot the Bulldogs make through the season. This year's payout was $39 more than last year's.
Turlock Christian High's quest for a return trip to the San Joaquin Section Division V title game fell short Wednesday night when the Eagles took on Capital Christian High in a semi-final matchup at Galt High School.
Turlock High is sending five wrestlers to this weekend's California Interscholastic Federation State Championships in Bakersfield after a fifth place team finish at the San Joaquin Section Masters Tournament on Saturday.

Friday proved to be the end of the road for Turlock Christian High's boys basketball team. The Eagles (13-16 overall, 7-7 SAL) failed to carry Wednesday's energy into Friday's matchup with Faith Christian High and lost 65-60 after a failed fourth quarter comeback.
