Stanislaus soccer assistant leaves for Midwest

Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer coach Dana Taylor announced Friday that Paul Lekics has stepped down from his assistant coaching position to return to the Midwest for a coaching gig with the FCX Soccer Club in Barrington, Ill. Lekics was with the Warriors for two seasons.

Former Cal State Stanislaus baseball standout Marquis Fleming has been named a 2011 Southern League All-Star. Fleming - a pitcher for the Montgomery (Alabama) Biscuits, the Class AA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays of the MLB - will play for the South Division on June 21 at Pringles Park in Jackson, Tenn.

Children’s book tells story of Mendonca, Bulldogs’ triumphant run

Today at Willow Bridge Books in Oakhurst, George Takata will hold a book signing from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. to promote his new children's book, "TimeOut's Great Baseball Adventure: How Fresno State's Favorite Bulldog Helped the Diamond Dogs Win the College World Series," which tells the story of the Fresno State baseball team's greatest triumph through the eyes of its mascot, TimeOut. That campaign, which took place in 2008, was led by Turlock High graduate Tommy Mendonca, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

Preikschas added to all-academic list

Add another academic achievement to the resume of Cal State Stanislaus women's tennis junior Verena Preikschas. The two-time All-American and two-time California Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic honoree was named Thursday to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America Women's At-Large Third Team.

Wheeland wraps up freshman season at Oklahoma State

Turlock High graduate Vince Wheeland had a learning experience as a freshman pitcher on the Oklahoma State baseball team. Since he was a newcomer, he didn't get much action, but he was part of a team that went to the NCAA Division I Nashville Regional, where the Cowboys lost 9-2 to Troy and 3-2 to Belmont to end the season on Saturday.

Stanislaus runner honored for academics

Cal State Stanislaus junior Dawson Vorderbruegge was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District track and field/cross country team last week. He is among 10 student-athletes in NCAA Divsion II and III to be named to the College Division District VIII team.

Stesha Brazil and her University of Houston softball team made a nice turnaround after losing to Oklahoma State in Friday's NCAA Division I Stillwater Super Regional opener. The Cougars entered Saturday knowing they needed to win two straight games in order to advance to the College World Series for the first time in program history.

Stanislaus mourns passing of beloved track coach

Mark Erickson was a fixture in Cal State Stanislaus track and field, as he was usually seen near the hammer throw or shot put rings at track meets. That was certainly the case last week when the NCAA Division II Championships were held at Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium.

Stanislaus men’s basketball adds JC transfers, prep standout

Coming off a run in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball has added four players for the upcoming fall season. Earlier this week, coach Larry Reynolds announced the signings of junior college transfers Vincent Fuller (El Camino College in Torrance), Joe Malone (El Camino College) and Donald Gaines (Southwestern College in San Diego) and nearby Amador High standout Clinton Tremelling.

Patrick Green: Bulldog to Lumberjack

There aren't many local football players who get the opportunity to play Division I college ball, but count Patrick Green in as one of the lucky few. A 2014 Turlock High graduate, Green entered his senior year as the 45th ranked tight end in the nation according to ESPN and earned All-Conference and All-State honors by season's end.
