Cal State Stanislaus is mourning the death of Jim Bowen, a man who was a mentor to students, taught physical education for four decades and guided the Warriors to two national championships during his 25-year coaching career. He died Thursday after a long illness.

The Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball team jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and were able to answer goal for goal through the first half of their California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night. But the Otters opened the second half strong with a layup by junior guard Michelle Santizo, which led to back-to-back three-pointers to raise CSUMB's lead to 51-36. A lay-up by Santizo gave the Otters their largest lead of the game, 53-36. CSUMB went on to earn a 58-44 victory.

In the past few weeks, he has been a major part of the Cal State Stanislaus men's basketball team that produced win after win in regular-season play and welcomed a new coach in Larry Reynolds who has a history of making teams into championship contenders. And personally, he was named as his league's best player this week after a solid weekend that saw him average nearly a double-double.

At Hilmar High, Nate Costa did a lot of big things with the football. He was the quarterback who earned all-state selection three times and led the Yellowjackets to the conference championship in 2005, when Hilmar posted a 12-1 record.

At this point in the season, with two exhibition wins under their belts and the next game not until after Thanksgiving, the Cal State Stanislaus women's basketball players and coaches are playing the waiting game. They're eagerly awaiting to hear if the NCAA will approve three transfers who could possibly change everything this season.
