No secrets in pro fishing

This past week the FLW Nation Guard Western Division Series Tournament was held on the Delta. The tournament was eventually won by Discovery Bay's Don Davis. Davis was fishing a little known area south of Mossdale that has been closed up for years by beaver dams and low water levels. I've fished there myself several years ago and can only imagine how good it must have been for him; nobody has been able get in there for years. His means for getting in were very ingenuitive and at the same time viewed by others as unfair. In his ...

Summer fishing has arrived

Summer has officially started for me and I have several friends that I promised to take fishing. It's been a crazy spring; I had one trip that was postponed three times due to the weather and another that has been postponed twice. Never before have I had to worry about the weather being a factor once getting past the month of April. I have a brother-in-law who lives in England, while he was over this past summer we were discussing a planned barbecue for this July. Fair makes changes for motocross event

Every year hundreds of motocross riders and fans pack the FoodMaxx Arena during the Stanislaus County Fair. The motocross event is a popular attraction at the fair and draws a large number of riders, making each event a long affair, often going into the wee hours of the morning. The 38th District Agricultural Association Board of Directors decided to make a change that will, hopefully, give motocross riders and their fans a little bit more slumber time. On Monday, the board unanimously approved to have daytime preliminary races, then a slack period prior to the main motocross event.

Fishing after a storm can be hit or miss

Fishing after a storm sometimes can turn the bite on. I remember one year when we had three storms in a row. Parts of I-5 were actually closed due to flooding but that didn't stop us from fishing Lake Amador. When we got there, the water was all muddied up and had risen several feet. Not really sure how to approach those conditions, we tossed out our plastic worms and proceeded to have one of the best fishing days we have ever had on the lake. In that situation the storm turned the fish on and the rising water ...

A good coach is hard to find

One day, Dave Morgan was watching his Denair High boys basketball players hold a free-throw contest. Even in this supposedly fun activity, he became frustrated that they weren't sinking enough shots - so much so that he barked to his players, "Gimme that thing!"
