The Stanislaus County Fair is here and with it an anticipation for fried foods, rides, exhibits, musical performances and motor sports. Of all the entertainment options available during the fair's nine-day run, the single most popular event is undoubtedly the two-day Destruction Derby, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday and hosted by the Turlock Lions Club.
The 18-year-old Stanislaus Cardinals Babe Ruth baseball team ended its season with an early run in the Pacific Southwest Regional Tournament. With the help of a pool of talented players from local schools including Turlock, Pitman and Hilmar High, the team is shaping up well and looking to surpass last season's success and eventually make the World Series.
The 48th Annual Outstanding Athlete Awards ceremony was held at the Sportsmen of Stanislaus Club in Modesto on Wednesday, bringing the best student and adult athletes Stanislaus County has to offer together for one night of recognition and fun.
The Sportsmen of Stanislaus club has been recognizing athletic achievements in the form of the Outstanding Athlete Award for several decades, celebrating and rewarding athletes from Stanislaus County for their success and ability in their respective sports. Players, coaches, teams and community contributors from all over the county have had the honor to win an OAA award, and tonight, at the 48th annual OAA banquet, four athletes from Turlock have the opportunity to be added to that list.
The sounds of high revving go karts were heard all weekend long on the temporary street circuit in the heart of downtown Modesto at the inaugural Save Mart Supermarkets Modesto Grand Prix for the Superkarts USA Summer Nationals.

Last year, at the age of 49, Stevinson local Cindy Kelley competed in her first CrossFit Games in the Masters Women 45-49 division, topping out in eighth place and taking third in one of the events in Los Angeles.
Saturday not only marked the near end of the Stanislaus County Fair, but also concluded the over week -long period of motorsports action at the Food Maxx Arena with quads, pee wee bikes and motocross competitors taking the action to the dirt track.
The mayhem of the Turlock Lions Destruction Derby at the Stanislaus County Fair began on Monday and concluded on Tuesday as many locals fared well in the two-day event at the Food Maxx Arena with thousands of spectators present to watch cars smash into each other until only one was left standing.
When local pastor Rusty Lyons decided to work together with the people of Calvary Baptist Church back in 2006 to put together a basketball recreation league, he never imagined that the effort would meet with such success, driving players to transform their game on and off the court.
Determination. Commitment. Passion. When I asked members of the local Sintral Valley Derby Girls roller derby team what it takes to be a 'derby girl', these were three of the qualities I was told. As a spectator at their practice I could see that they loved the sport, but it was not until I literally stepped into their shoes -or skates rather - that my interest in roller derby became more of a fascination.
Tyler Murphy's world was turned upside down last August when a boating accident derailed his collegiate baseball dreams. While the injuries he sustained and the doctors' prognosis for his recovery seemed bleak at first, Murphy wowed friends, family, and supporters by standing on his own two feet, unassisted, only two months after the accident.
