The inevitable is here: Tom Brandstater, the former Turlock High and Fresno State standout quarterback, will play in an NFL game. It will happen Friday, when his Denver Broncos face the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park in preseason action at 7 p.m.
It was an unfamiliar feeling in a familiar setting. Blake Hirdes couldn't hide from the pressure of his surroundings Thursday night, as he was about to get on his horse, Whiskey, and try to rope an animal that had no desire in getting caught. He was about to attempt this in front of his home crowd at the FoodMaxx Arena, with thousands of people watching and his parents and one of his brothers in the ...
Fans at the FoodMaxx Arena this week had plenty to cheer about, as motorcycle jumpers did their version of gymnastics in the air and kids and adults got a kick of adrenaline rush in the quad drag races. A good chunk of the quad drag racers were local, while there was one motorcycle jumper who recently participated in the X-Games. It was an eventful night in which spectators cheered on quad drag riders as they went as fast as they could on a 200-feet track.
The quest is over. Although it didn't end with final victory; the Modesto Babe Ruth 16-18-year-old baseball team can look back at the season and know it was an action-packed ride. The players and coaches were just one win away from recapturing the glory and success they achieved in 2008.
Tom Mendonca's legacy just keeps growing. After a decorated career at Fresno State, the Turlock High graduate was the top male student-athlete in the Western Athletic Conference as he earned the Joe Kearney Award on Tuesday. The award is named in honor of the former WAC commissioner and given to the top male and female student-athletes in the league. Fresno State women's tennis player Melanie Gloria was the other winner. Mendonca, now playing for the ...
At precisely 7:30 p.m. Monday night, a horn blared to signal the start of the first of four preliminary heats at "Traditional Turmoil" the first of two straight evenings of the fan favorite demolition derby action, presented annually by the Turlock Lions Club at the Stanislaus County Fair.
It wasn't a typical day at the Stanislaus County Fair on Saturday evening, as the sun was making its slow descent in the west. The drivers sat in their vehicles that lined up in a row looking almost endless, waiting for a turn.

It wasn't easy. The Modesto Babe Ruth 16-18-year-old baseball players suffered a 4-3 loss to Watsonville in the second round of the Pacific Southwest Regional at Watsonville High last week, only to use it as motivation. The players then surged back into the spotlight. The defending tournament champions went on to win the next three elimination games, and they were playing for the regional championship late Tuesday night against San Gabriel. (Results weren't available at ...
The Turlock Tornados girls soccer under-13 team is on a winning streak, and the players and coaches hope to continue their good fortune.
For the Modesto Babe Ruth 16-18-year-old baseball team winning is now a recurring theme. And the players did it again on Thursday night, exploding for eight runs in the first inning of their Pacific Southwest Regional opener against Nevada at Wastonville High in Wastonville. They won 19-1.
Tom Brandstater was looking cool and relaxed in a T-shirt and a pair of shorts and sandals along the sidelines of Joe Debely Stadium last week, taking in the last day of his nearly three-week break from the Denver Broncos.
MODESTO - One by one, the batters went down, humbly and stoically back to their dugout. They knew it was going to be a difficult day, and not because the state championship was at stake.
MODESTO - Bobby Swedberg, the coach of the Modesto Babe Ruth 16-18 year-old baseball team, gathered his players in a huddle before the top of the third inning. He didn't like what he was seeing so far. He challenged them to be better.
The night started just as it had in years past. Modified and reinforced cars entered Food Maxx Arena one by one, taking a ceremonial parade lap as the crowd cheered. Behind them followed six tow trucks, stalking the cars as a vulture would their soon-to-be prey - a sign of the destruction to come. "I've been watching the derby for about five years," Shannon Nixon said. "I love the excitement of the cars ...
Mariela Banuelos and Marco Valladares stepped into Fresno's Aleman Gym on Saturday racked with nerves as they prepared for the first boxing match of their amateur careers. The two fighters tapped into more than three years of training to defeat their respective opponents via decision, becoming the latest fighters from Delhi Boxing Club to win in their amateur debuts. "I couldn't believe it," Valladares said. "It took a while for it to hit ...
When Stanislaus County Fair Destruction Derby Promoter Buster Lucas switched the dates of the fan-favorite competition from Monday and Tuesday to Friday and Saturday, he believed the field size would increase.
The Ceres father-daughter tandem of Greg and Kinsey Mathews have chosen to forego the 37th Stanislaus County Fair Destruction Derby for religious reasons.
Anthony Harding's interest in physical fitness was born many years ago when he was just a kid on the football field. It grew as he attended Pitman High, where he became a two-sport varsity standout, flourished at Fresno State University, where Harding majored in Kinesiology and served as the Bulldog's running back, and finally took a hold of him during his preparation for the NFL combines after graduation. After four years in the ...
Turlockers Paul Larson and Dave Maggard were recently inducted into the California Interscholastic Federation's Sac-Joaquin Section 2012 Hall of Fame class for their athletic accomplishments at Turlock High and beyond. Both were three-sport standouts, representing the Bulldogs on the football field, basketball court and track. While at Turlock, Larson earned a 1947 SJS section championship in the 880-yard dash and was named the Cal Hi Sports state football player of the year in ...
The Turlock Pentecost Association wrapped up its 100th anniversary celebration with a Galla Traditional Portuguese Bullfight at the Stevinson Pentecost Bull Fighting Arena on Monday. Those in attendance were treated with a taste of 18th century Portuguese culture as Cavaleiros (horseman), Matadores and Forcados (suicide squad) battled six bulls in the center of the ring, risking injury for the sake of entertainment, pride and tradition. Although many individuals in today's society hold negative ...
Tony Merafuentes is known as Master by his Tae Kwon Do students, a title that reflects his knowledge and status as a Tae Kwon Do practitioner. As a Master, Merafuentes holds a high degree of credibility in regards to his instruction and critiques of others but even he is outranked by another; Grand Master San Ho Lee.
On Saturday I drove to the S.O.S Club in Modesto to watch the SINtral Valley Derby Girls host the Shasta Mountain Mighty Rollers, where I experienced the cult sensation known as roller derby for the first time. As I walked onto the basketball court - which had been fashioned into a makeshift track - I couldn't help but notice the crowd's enthusiasm as the girls strapped on their helmets and prepared to jam. <p ...
Turlock's Chris Falkenberg is relatively new to the sport of dirt track racing but he hasn't let that stop him from winning - or having fun. Falkenberg, who races in Chowchilla, Merced and Watsonville, recently won three straight races and currently sits in first place at both the Merced and Chowchilla tracks, which is not an easy feat for a rookie. "Usually, the rookies are running in the back learning but I've raced ...
Everybody has a dream. For young boys those dreams often involve some sort of athletic achievement and recognition. As boys turn into men their dreams often fade and are replaced my new, more realistic ones, geared towards the perceived 'real world' and its required responsibilities. But some never abandon their dreams. Instead, they push forward in the face of adversity, determined to make it. Livingston's Edward Mackey, 25, still carries his dream ...
Martial arts has experienced an uptick in enthusiasm in the last few years as kids, teenagers and adults flock to the various disciplines to learn self defense and respect while satisfying their competitive tendencies. Enthusiasm alone often isn't enough for some, however, as the cost to train, equip oneself, and compete has kept some potential martial artists away from the sports. That's where Junior Merafuentes, leader of Modesto's Merafuentes Korean Karate, has stepped ...
Anglers Choice WRL held its fourth event of the season at Lake McClure on Sunday, and local teams reeled in the big fish - and bucks.
Thirty years ago the California State University, Stanislaus men's basketball team made a memorable run, reaching the 1982 Division III Final Four Tournament for the first and only time in the school's history. On Saturday the former Warriors returned to Kirkpatrick Arena to be honored for their achievement during Stanislaus' game against Cal Poly Pomona. Doug Cornfoot and Dave Walls may be the most recognizable of the reunited bunch, Cornfoot as the head ...
The weather has been slightly unpredictable as of late, alternating from cold and foggy conditions to warm and sunny days. For most of us in the Valley these weather variations are nothing more than a slight inconvenience but for skiers and snowboarders it means a delay to their favorite season. At this time last year a huge snowfall ignited the season, sending hordes of skiing and snowboarding aficionados to mountains all over California. ...
