The inevitable is here: Tom Brandstater, the former Turlock High and Fresno State standout quarterback, will play in an NFL game. It will happen Friday, when his Denver Broncos face the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park in preseason action at 7 p.m.
It was an unfamiliar feeling in a familiar setting. Blake Hirdes couldn't hide from the pressure of his surroundings Thursday night, as he was about to get on his horse, Whiskey, and try to rope an animal that had no desire in getting caught. He was about to attempt this in front of his home crowd at the FoodMaxx Arena, with thousands of people watching and his parents and one of his brothers in the ...
Fans at the FoodMaxx Arena this week had plenty to cheer about, as motorcycle jumpers did their version of gymnastics in the air and kids and adults got a kick of adrenaline rush in the quad drag races. A good chunk of the quad drag racers were local, while there was one motorcycle jumper who recently participated in the X-Games. It was an eventful night in which spectators cheered on quad drag riders as they went as fast as they could on a 200-feet track.
The quest is over. Although it didn't end with final victory; the Modesto Babe Ruth 16-18-year-old baseball team can look back at the season and know it was an action-packed ride. The players and coaches were just one win away from recapturing the glory and success they achieved in 2008.
Tom Mendonca's legacy just keeps growing. After a decorated career at Fresno State, the Turlock High graduate was the top male student-athlete in the Western Athletic Conference as he earned the Joe Kearney Award on Tuesday. The award is named in honor of the former WAC commissioner and given to the top male and female student-athletes in the league. Fresno State women's tennis player Melanie Gloria was the other winner. Mendonca, now playing for the ...

It wasn't a typical day at the Stanislaus County Fair on Saturday evening, as the sun was making its slow descent in the west. The drivers sat in their vehicles that lined up in a row looking almost endless, waiting for a turn.

It wasn't easy. The Modesto Babe Ruth 16-18-year-old baseball players suffered a 4-3 loss to Watsonville in the second round of the Pacific Southwest Regional at Watsonville High last week, only to use it as motivation. The players then surged back into the spotlight. The defending tournament champions went on to win the next three elimination games, and they were playing for the regional championship late Tuesday night against San Gabriel. (Results weren't available at ...
The Turlock Tornados girls soccer under-13 team is on a winning streak, and the players and coaches hope to continue their good fortune.
For the Modesto Babe Ruth 16-18-year-old baseball team winning is now a recurring theme. And the players did it again on Thursday night, exploding for eight runs in the first inning of their Pacific Southwest Regional opener against Nevada at Wastonville High in Wastonville. They won 19-1.
Tom Brandstater was looking cool and relaxed in a T-shirt and a pair of shorts and sandals along the sidelines of Joe Debely Stadium last week, taking in the last day of his nearly three-week break from the Denver Broncos.
MODESTO - One by one, the batters went down, humbly and stoically back to their dugout. They knew it was going to be a difficult day, and not because the state championship was at stake.
MODESTO - Bobby Swedberg, the coach of the Modesto Babe Ruth 16-18 year-old baseball team, gathered his players in a huddle before the top of the third inning. He didn't like what he was seeing so far. He challenged them to be better.
While Kim Corgiat was explaining the "rebranding" of Turlock Aquatic Club, the coach kept an eye on her swimmers, who were in the middle of a friendly competition toward the end of practice at the Pitman High pool. In this instance, swimming was not a task. It was a fun activity, and that's how Corgiat and her program want others to see it. "We're trying to have a lot more fun out here," ...
Turlock native Harry Boucher is using his love of swimming to spread the message that people with disabilities deserve to Live Without Limits. Boucher was inspired by his 7-year-old son, Max, to reach out to the public with his Live Without Limits campaign. Max was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was 2-years-old and uses a wheelchair and a walker to get around.
For Stanislaus County cowgirl Bailey Castello, 21, rodeo is in her blood. Her signature event is team roping and it's something that comes naturally for her. The Castello family has run a beef cattle ranch in Livermore for decades and as a child she learned the family business in the saddle with a rope in her hand.
Stanislaus County Fair, July 19
With the drop of the official's green flag "Traditional Turmoil," the first of two Turlock Lion's Club Annual Demolition Derbies, roared to life on Monday night in front of the packed to capacity grandstands in the Food Maxx Arena.
Stanislaus County Fair, July 18
Sunday night's crowd at FoodMaxx Arena at the Stanislaus County Fair experienced two unique motorsports. One did damage on the ground, the other did it in the air.
The Cal State Stanislaus men's and women's soccer programs and the Turlock Youth Soccer Association are once again hosting a fun-filled community event to kick off the 2011 season.
The old men who walked into Latif's Restaurant on Friday morning were part of a standout bunch.
