Local drivers embrace the mud

What most drivers would consider nightmare road conditions were just the ticket for area Mud Bog competitors at the last night of the Stanislaus County Fair on Sunday. The muddier the better was the mantra of those who put their four-wheel drives to the test in the knee-deep mud pits which took center stage in FoodMaxx Arena. The annual Mud Bog competition consisted of four categories: Rhino/Rangers, Local, Super Stock and Modified. The majority of drivers in the Local division brought their respective trucks and Jeeps out mainly for some dirty fun, with winning taking a back seat. "It ...

This is a truth about humanity that no one can seem to deny: Whenever there's a car accident, nearby drivers and passengers can't help but break their necks to see what had happened. This is also true for demolition derby. But in this particular setting, there's no guilt involved for the spectators. Just a lot of cheering and hollering, encouraging the demolition drivers to smash to pieces whatever is closest to them. It was an undeniable scene Tuesday night at the FoodMaxx Arena, where the Stanislaus County Fair was wrapping up its second and final day of ...

No secrets in pro fishing

This past week the FLW Nation Guard Western Division Series Tournament was held on the Delta. The tournament was eventually won by Discovery Bay's Don Davis. Davis was fishing a little known area south of Mossdale that has been closed up for years by beaver dams and low water levels. I've fished there myself several years ago and can only imagine how good it must have been for him; nobody has been able get in there for years. His means for getting in were very ingenuitive and at the same time viewed by others as unfair. In his ...

Summer fishing has arrived

Summer has officially started for me and I have several friends that I promised to take fishing. It's been a crazy spring; I had one trip that was postponed three times due to the weather and another that has been postponed twice. I have a brother-in-law who lives in England, while he was over this past summer we were discussing a planned barbecue for this July. His response was, "it must be nice not having to worry about the ...
