While updating my phone it crashed and I lost all of my information. Initially, I didn't think it was such a big deal. I couldn't have been more wrong as I ended up spending most of the day trying to recover all of my lost information. It's really quite scary how much information can be lost in a matter of seconds. On my boat I have ...
When I was a kid, I used to dig through the family couch for loose change. It's kind of silly now, but that was the fastest way to land cash for me at the time. All that money I came across went straight to the local baseball card store.
Just imagine the dark orange color that comes from a burning basketball jersey, one lit up by brokenhearted sports fans. LeBron James can't.
A close relative of mine mentioned to me that he was going camping for two days at one of the local lakes. As he began to go through his packing list, he couldn't help to add a few things here and there. Before he knew it, his truck was completely full. He couldn't believe how much stuff he needed for just a few days of camping.
About a year ago around this time, I wrote about the importance of Brock Lesnar, the UFC heavyweight champion that had the mouth to go along with his pit bull physique. He was a different kind of MMA fighter.
I've been thinking about this whole NBA free agency thingy. You know, the one that boasts the greatest free agency class in NBA history. There's the possibility of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh coming together to build a superstar team, and load of other big-time hoop stars that can alter any team into a good one. I've also been thinking about the whole "Twilight" madness and how it relates ...
This past weekend I received a hot tip on a camping location located slightly above Sonora. Being that it was going to be almost 20 degrees cooler up there than in the Manteca, I was open to the idea of spending the day someplace cooler. With my wife and son open to the idea of going for a little trip, we loaded the car with some essentials and off ...
Inside a downtown Modesto bar, while the customers were indulging in the FIFA World Cup, there was a problem. A major one.
For me, June 23 commenced shortly after 6 a.m. I was up for soccer. I thought that was all, since I had planned to watch the U.S. men's final attempt to make soccer important with fellow Americans before heading back to sleep. But that wasn't all: June 23, 2010, became one of the most awesomely shocking days in sports history - for the most part. There was also that marathon of ...
It's not natural to wake up around the same time as the sun to watch sports, even for the most diehard fans. To me, sports seem to be more of an after-work affair, an opportunity to share a good time with family and friends either in the living room or at a sports bar, or something like that.
During the spring, there are seven sports that encompass the lives of many of the area high school students. That means plenty of stories, late-game heroics and heartbreak moments happen during this time. So what I'm about to do won't be easy. Actually, it'll be extremely tough.
Tommy Mendonca will be back in town. Well, sort of. The former Turlock High and Fresno State standout will make another set of appearances near his hometown next week, as the Bakersfield Blaze third baseman - of the Class A Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers - will start a three-game series against the Modesto Nuts at John Thurman Field in Modesto starting on Monday. Monday's game starts at 7:05 p.m., with the following games ...
What if Gordon Hayward's shot went in? If you were one of the millions who watched Monday night's NCAA Tournament Championship in Indianapolis, you know that Butler's best player was close to achieving immorality if his last-second halfcourt fling didn't bounce off the backboard at the Lucas Oil Stadium and then the rim before landing on the floor. It resulted in another celebration for Duke, a walking national championship trophy. It also resulted in perhaps ...
Sometimes I like to repeat myself, and I'm going to do just that here: High school sports are the purest form of sports. It really captures what sports are all about -- the passion, the endless hours of practice, the small-town glory. And sometimes the athletes get to showcase their hard work in front of thousands of people or just a few dozen, mostly parents and peers. The effort is all the same.
Memorial Day weekend is one of those weekends I plan on celebrating at home. There's sure to be a "Band of Brothers" marathon to keep me entertained and the weather forecast looks great for hanging around the pool.
Proving that you don't have to finish first to be a winner Dylan Kwasniewski, 16, of Las Vegas, picked up a victory in last Saturday's Graham Tire "150" NASCAR K&N Pro Series East & K&N Pro Series West combination race at Iowa Speedway.
At least once a year my family has a garage sale. We pull out the normal garage sale items like clothes, small appliances, tools, furniture, and anything else that's been taking up space. Usually, I set up a table with old fishing gear. This year I didn't have much time to prepare, so I left out my fishing gear. I did put out some old rain gear and a box full of plastic baits ...
I've come to sort of a crossroad; I'm doing more trout fishing lately than bass fishing. There was a time not too long ago where I would toss back every fish I caught in my pursuit of catching bass. I've always known there was great trout and kokanee fishing around us but never quite had an interest. Call it old age or just being lazy, but sitting back while waiting for the fish to ...
Three-time NASCAR K&N Pro Series West champion Eric Holmes of Escalon grew up watching his father Steve Holmes compete against local legends such as Ken Boyd, David Philpott, Ron Strmiska and Harry Belletto at Stockton's 99 Speedway so, naturally, the closure of the historic short-track at the end of the 2006 season was a very big disappointment to him.
Recently I was able to get out and enjoy some of the beautiful weather we've been having. Unfortunately it came with a cost, while showering over the weekend I discovered that I had been bitten by a tick. I've experienced ticks before so I got my tweezers and removed it. What was different about this one was that the area where I had been bitten was more swollen then I can remember previous tick bites being.
Following a one week delay due to the weather, the new Stockton 99 Speedway is set to kick off its 2012 season tonight with the Spears Manufacturing 125 for the SRL Late Model Southwest Tour Series.
Last week I was able to get out fishing, it's been a while since I've been out. My partner became ill the night before, leaving me to fish by myself. I had my dog with me, but she wasn't much help lying on the bottom of the boat dead asleep most of the day. At one point I even heard her snoring! <p class="MsoNormal" style="background: none repeat ...
The end of football season marks both a happy and sad time for me. Although I fish year round, football helps fill the void when I'm stuck at home unable to fish. The nice thing about the end of football season is the beginning of spring and with the weather we've been getting lately, we just may have an early spring. Already, there have been unconfirmed reports of giant bass being caught; this ...
Ricky Williams. The enigmatic running back remembered by many as that one guy who retired from the NFL to burn trees. The Heisman Trophy winner, one time pride of the University of Texas and former first round pick has retired for the second, and seemingly last, time. Since his NFL arrival in 1999 Ricky has gotten more attention for his personal qualities than his on field performances. The infamous bride and groom photo ...
So, my earlier predictions did not exactly pan out. After Cincinnati and Detroit's first round losses there was still a flicker of hope that my Super Bowl picks would offer me redemption, but Green Bay's horrendous performance against New York left me hanging out to dry with a plate of crow. Instead of dwelling on my misses let me point out that, as I predicted, Baltimore, New England and San Francisco will be ...
The NFL's regular season is over and it's time for the playoffs, that special three-week stretch that ends with the grandest of events - The Super Bowl. For many fans, last Sunday bore witness to dashed dreams and disappointing finishes for their teams. For fans lucky enough to root for one of the 12 qualifying teams it marked the beginning of their team's quest for greatness. Half of this year's participants are returning ...
Every once in a while I see someone out on the water with a dog in their boat. I've always wished that I could one day have a dog that would keep me company while out on the water. Unfortunately, all of my attempts at making our family's pet a fishing buddy have never quite worked out. Recently, I was given a lab pup that I'm hoping will be my next great fishing ...
It puzzles me sometimes how something can break without even being used.
I was finally able free up some time on Veterans Day to go fishing. It's been a while since I've been out. Actually, since football started back in June, I've been pretty busy until now. So, I was able to convince one of my mentors, Coach Dudley Kinlaw, to get on the boat with me and go out for a few hours.
