Why is it that every time the weather is absolutely perfect for fishing, I have something else planned or I'm working? Then of course, when I finally get some time to get out fishing, a wind storm or some other type of change in the weather occurs.
We're on the eve of the first annual Central Valley Senior Showcase, a pair of exhibition basketball games featuring the top senior players from eight local high schools.
Every angler has his or her favorite fishing spot, I'm no different. Last weekend while fishing Lake Pardee, which is full by the way, my son and I were struggling to get any bites. We moved around from spot to spot until I decided that we try an old spot that I've been fishing since I was a kid. There was a time when that spot was the only place that I would fish on the lake, but as my boats have gotten bigger and more reliable, I've since ventured out. After fishing a while, my son ...
Once again, the trees are blossoming, which means that the big fish are going to start biting. As always, it comes down to the right water temperature and the correct moon phase. This next full moon on March 5, combined with rising water temperatures, is surely going to move a large wave of fish up shallow to spawn. The only thing that could interrupt those fish from moving up shallow would be a drastic drop in water temperature as a result of a series of cold days. With our current weather conditions, I don't see that coming. So, start ...
Even though there are no local teams in the playoffs, the Journal sports team decided to tackle this weekend's playoff games. There are grudge matches and seemingly lopsided contests today and Sunday, but you may be surprised by some of the picks made by Frankie Tovar and Eddie Ruiz. Do your predictions line up with ours? Read through the matchups and find out.
Last Thursday, while celebrating Thanksgiving, I mentioned to a family member that I was excited about my upcoming fishing trip. He responded by saying "most guys can't handle waiting six or more hours without getting a bite." I responded by saying, "I've waited days for a bite in the past."
With one out to get for the 2014 World Series title, a colossally bad defensive play threatened to lose the Giants a championship. San Francisco center fielder Gregor Blanco missed a fly ball. Left fielder Juan Perez kicked it. Kansas City's Alex Gordon sprinted to third and the Royals sent Salvador Perez to bat with a chance to win the game.
School starts in less than a week, which signifies to me that summer is coming to an end. It's been a pretty good summer. I kicked it off with a fishing trip and just yesterday officially ended my summer with a fishing trip. In the middle, I mixed in a couple camping trips to Clarks Fork, Lake Pardee, and even scouted out some future camping spots.
The San Francisco Giants have won two of the previous four World Series with Bruce Bochy at the helm. This year, they are chasing history to hopefully make it three of five - but the season has been rocky leading up to the final two months of baseball.
Life jackets are one of the most valuable pieces of equipment on a boat. A lot of owners spend huge amounts of money on radio systems, wakeboard towers, downriggers, power poles, and other luxury items on their boats. When it comes to life jackets though, a lot of times they couldn't tell you what sizes they have and some of them even keep them stowed away under a seat compartment somewhere.
The 2014 World Cup has come down to a final match between two soccer powerhouses-Germany and Argentina.
For several years now there's been a mandatory inspection for boats entering our local lakes for quagga-zebra mussels. Most of us I'm sure think of the inspection as a hassle but it's necessary to help prevent these species from taking over our lakes.
Here's a cool stat: In this year's World Cup more goals have been scored in the group stages than at any other World Cup with 32 teams competing. The tournament has seen 136 goals already, which tops the tallies of 130 and 126 in 2002 and 1998, respectively.
Summer time is top water fishing time for bass. Catching bass on a top water lure is one of the most exciting experiences in fishing. As exciting as it is, it also can be very difficult hooking up with a fish once it strikes. A common mistake anglers make when fishing with top water lures is setting the hook too early. Experienced anglers will tell you to wait until you feel the fish, but that's easier said than done. It took me several years and many hours on the water until I finally was able to wait on my ...
Summer vacation has officially started for my family, this week we've been spending the first part of it camping at Lake Pardee. Actually, I'm typing this report from the picnic table of my campsite. Currently, we're the only family camping mid-week, making it even more enjoyable. The fishing has been good; the early morning kokanee bite is great, I've even been able to catch a few during the middle of the day.
I'm pretty sure that all the talk amongst fishermen lately has been dominated with the water levels in our local lakes. It's definitely a concern of mine as I can't help to not think about how many of my summer fishing spots are already above water.
