The compounding costs of fishing

Another Christmas has passed, and this year I got my annual fishing license as a gift from my parents. I was reminded of when I was 12 years old; it seemed like yesterday when I didn't have to worry about a fishing license. The only thing I worried about back then was getting a ride to my favorite fishing spot.

Turlock sports: Year in Review

In only a few days noise makers, confetti, and kisses will usher in the New Year; marking the end of 2012 and signaling the beginning of 2013. But before the celebrations and doomed resolutions consume our lives, it's important to look back on the year that was and the events that helped shape it.

'Tis the season to stay warm

I can't say I've ever been fishing on Christmas Day, although I went out on Christmas Eve once.

'Keep things simple' in tackle box

I've learned over the years that a person could drive themselves crazy worrying about every little detail when it came to fishing.

Expect the unexpected

I can't remember how many times over the past year that I've emphasized being prepared for the unexpected while out fishing.

Whatever floats your boat

Often I overhear fishermen talking about the perfect boat; of course the brand of their boat is the best!

Take a kid fishing

I received an e-mail this week asking me to remind everyone to "take a kid fishing." With all the distractions kids have today, very few have ever gone fishing. Some have fished more from their couch while playing a fishing video game, than actually fishing. Growing up there were very few things to do at home and if I stood around long enough I'd almost surely be put to work. At the time I lived around three small ponds, so when I wasn't home, I was fishing or just hanging around the shoreline of one of those ponds ...

Better off not knowing

This past weekend while out fishing Clark Fork, I was reminded of the first time I was given an open book test. I remember thinking to myself that it would be easy. I didn't study much because I figured the answers were right in the book, so why study.

Boxing’s Olympic fall

It's no secret that the sport of boxing has experienced a dip in popularity. Public perception of the sweet science has soured as newer generations of fight fans redirect their attention towards Mixed Martial Arts, leaving boxing aficionados to ask why.

One last fling with outdoors

As the summer break is winding down it seems like a lot of people - including myself - are attempting to get in one last camping trip before the new school year begins.

Only a day trip away

This past week I went and camped out at Clarks Fork with family and friends. It was a 100 mile one way trip to get there, but well worth the drive.

Don’t be lured in by gimmicks

I was asked recently about a lure that was being advertised through an infomercial. The lure being advertised supposedly was outlawed on certain lakes because of its sure effectiveness. They even had professional anglers promoting the lure as a must-have bait for every angler. Many of the anglers promoting the product were unknown professionals and the lure supposedly caught just about every species of fish.
