Time to pass on the love of boating

When I was a kid I used to look at a car's speedometer believing that the highest number on the speedometer represented how fast that car could go. Like most kids, I wanted to have the fastest car and boat someday.

Internet age not all bad

Nearly 10 years ago, when I first started writing this column, I wrote about a new product that was being advertised throughout the fishing community. I questioned whether or not it was just another gimmick. To my surprise, I was contacted several days later, not by a representative of the company, but the owner himself. I learned since then just how fast information can travel across the internet.

Kokanee get a break this year due to drought

This year, more than any other year, I'm really being forced to think twice about where I'm going to go fishing next. Very few of my regular summertime fishing spots have enough water to safely or easily launch my boat anymore. These past few years I've really enjoyed fishing for Kokanee. Lakes like New Melones and Don Pedro are full of Kokanee but are both at their lowest in decades. All of the reports have stated that it's safe to launch with a 4X4, but without a courtesy dock and only one lane, I'm not ...

Rush to lake turns into trip to tire shop

As the song goes "school's out for summer!" I was so excited to get my boat out this past Monday. As always, before exiting my driveway I did a quick inspection of my boat and trailer, and noticed that one of the tires on my trailer was a little low on air. Not thinking of it as a big deal, I headed out to the lake anyway. As I entered the entrance to the lake, I was waved down by a motorist letting me know that one of my trailer tires had gone flat. Sure enough, that tire had ...

El Nino on the way? I'll believe it when I see it

I'm not sure what to think about the weather we've been having lately. Usually by this time of year we're all complaining about how hot it is. It's been really nice lately, the winds have been blowing just enough to keep the temperatures down, and our nights have been nice and cool. Yesterday during my lunch break, I was reading the news online and was surprised to read that weather forecasting centers around the world are predicting an El Nino by the end of this year, similar to the one we had in 1997-98. So, last ...

Back to hard copy for tide prediction

Fishing on the Delta this past weekend was very difficult. I can't remember ever fishing a tide like one I faced last weekend. The water level fluctuated a total of one foot between high and low tide meaning that the water was barely moving where I was fishing. In the past I used to carry a tide book in my boat but have since relied on downloadable tide app for my phone. I don't know if it's me reading using the app wrong but I'm still not able to get an accurate tide prediction.

Two men, one boat equals one great day

These past few weeks my older sister, her husband, and two boys were visiting all the way from England. I was able to take my brother-in-law out fishing with me twice. Both times we limited out and really had a great time.

In search of fishable water

I'm pretty sure that all the talk amongst fishermen lately has been dominated with the water levels in our local lakes. It's definitely a concern of mine as I can't help to not think about how many of my summer fishing spots are already above water.

Don't be a just fair weather fisherman

Why is it that every time the weather is absolutely perfect for fishing, I have something else planned or I'm working? Then of course, when I finally get some time to get out fishing, a wind storm or some other type of change in the weather occurs.

Magic still alive in favorite fishing spot

Every angler has his or her favorite fishing spot, I'm no different. Last weekend while fishing Lake Pardee, which is full by the way, my son and I were struggling to get any bites. We moved around from spot to spot until I decided that we try an old spot that I've been fishing since I was a kid. There was a time when that spot was the only place that I would fish on the lake, but as my boats have gotten bigger and more reliable, I've since ventured out. After fishing a while, my son ...
