In his State of the Union address earlier this week, President Obama outlined his plan to move our economy forward by expanding opportunity for all Americans. Recognizing the role that agriculture continues to play in our nation's economic recovery, the President said, "Today in America, […] a farmer prepared for the spring after the strongest five-year stretch of farm exports in our history."
It's been a full week of 2014, and I finally made my New Year's resolutions list. Actually, I don't believe in resolutions, as it's too easy to say, "well, I failed so there's no point in keeping it," so I made a 2014 goals list. A goal is something you strive for on an ongoing basis, not a pass-fail concept like a resolution.
Government carries out many essential responsibilities, but dictating what corn should be used for is not one of them. Yet that is what the federal government is doing to the detriment of California's dairies, many of whom are struggling to survive.

While I've been on the job for a few months now, I've yet to formally introduce myself: My name is Elizabeth Arakelian and I am the newest reporter at the Turlock Journal.
