Humbled by your love and support

As I reflect on this past year, 2014, I am humbled by the outpouring of love and support for the ministry of the Turlock Gospel Mission. It has been a groundbreaking year with the beginning of the construction of 437 Broadway Street building for the year around shelter for men, women and children, which we hope to complete in 2015.

Support brings Fusion Charter to life

On Nov. 20, Aspiranet's Fusion Charter, an independent charter that opened on Sept. 8, celebrated the new school together with students, parents, educators and guests. The event kicked off with a ribbon cutting ceremony by the Turlock Chamber of Commerce. I would like to thank Dr. Sonny Da Marto, superintendent, and Gil Ogden, director of student services for Turlock Unified School District, who were instrumental in executing the vision for Fusion Charter, and all of our community partners who made the opening of this school possible. Dr. Da Marto and Mr. Ogden also spoke on making the dream for ...

Desalination just makes plain sense

Desalination isn't just an obvious solution for the state's record drought; it's actually the only solution that will produce a reliable, drought proof water source. And while a comprehensive water management strategy is crucial in California, you can't manage what you don't have. The best most reliable measurement of California's water supply is the Sierra snowpack. In the 1960s one could find snow pack in the Sierra's at 10,000 feet year around. Today you're lucky if you can find snow at 14,000 feet, and the April 2014 rains didn't ...

Turlock roads lose again

With the narrow defeat of Measure B, fixing Turlock roads have taken a back seat again. To the 61 percent of Turlock voters willing to re-invest into fixing our critically important transportation infrastructure, the community thanks you. Unfortunately, a minority of voters have pushed much needed repairs down the road – a road that is in dire need of repair, filled with ever increasing potholes.

Ready to set a clear vision for Turlock's future

I wanted to take a moment, in this post-election fog, to say thank you to the residents of Turlock for electing me as their next mayor. I am humbled to have gained the confidence of my city and the opportunity to lead our community for the next four years. I will work diligently to bring the vision I have discussed and campaigned on into reality.

Turlock Firefighters-Local #2434 have never tried to control elected officials

It troubles me to hear that my organization has been referred to as the source of a fictional disease, "Power Grab Syndrome" (PGS), in an attempt to control the Turlock City Council, in an opinion offered on Oct. 30 by George King. I would like to take a moment to educate the readers of this forum about the political practices of the Turlock Firefighters- Local #2434.

Creating jobs for current and future workers is my top priority

As a parent, small business owner and local farmer, I know that the success of the Valley depends on our ability to create an environment where our kids can grow up here and stay for years to come. That's why my top priority is creating jobs here at home, helping kids born and raised here to stay and begin successful lives where they can find work.

Stop unions' bid to control the Turlock City Council

It seems Turlock Firefighters Union has infected the Turlock Police Officers Union with their political disease: "Power Grab Syndrome" (PGS) to control the Turlock City Council.

Adam Gray has made the valley a better place

Over my career I have spent a great deal of time trying to make the San Joaquin Valley a better place for our families and communities. In that time I learned that we do best if we work and stand together when valley interests are at stake. They are at risk in next week's election.

Gary Soiseth is a breath of fresh air

My family and I met Gary Soiseth this last Saturday when he walked through my neighborhood in the rain. He spoke about his commitment to a positive campaign without negative attacks against his opponent. He spoke about moving Turlock in an even stronger direction. And he spoke about bringing new energy and new ideas to City Hall. All of which I agree with.

Roman Catholic Bishops support Proposition 47

Proposition 47 is the one proposition on the ballot for which the Roman Catholic Bishops of California have taken a position of support. "The California Safe Neighborhoods Act" is a step forward in reforming the broken criminal justice system in our state. It will provide educational support and treat mental illness to make our communities safer while addressing sentencing discrepancies in constructive ways.

Our community would be fortunate to have Soiseth as Mayor

Gary Soiseth recently volunteered to spend a day speaking with high school students about his experiences in Afghanistan and his commitment to public service. After hearing him speak, I felt that any community would be fortunate to have him as a leader. He is intelligent, well-spoken, and most importantly, he is passionate. As a teacher, I value his desire to help the youth of tomorrow discover their potential, and I applaud his efforts to help them achieve their goals. Gary's ability to connect with the youth of today will help foster the generation of tomorrow.
