We need more positive Latina role models
The nomination by our President Obama for Judge Sotomayor made me very proud as a Latina who, like Sotomayor, believed in the power of education.
Small claims not big enough
Have you ever noticed that when people say they hate attorneys, that it's usually their own attorney that they hate? The costs of hiring an attorney are often more than the cases are worth, even if you win!
West side discrimination
The hit and run homicide, which occurred on Jan. 31, of my son Kelly R. Story has still not been solved. The shooting of my grandson in 2007 and the robbery of my parents in 2008 also remain unsolved.
4th of July show a success
What an awesome family event on July 4 hosted by the Turlock Chamber of Commerce. The fireworks show was spectacular, the bounce houses were smashing hit, and the Dominos Pizza was reasonably priced and yummy. Yay Turlock, our family had an awesome evening on July 4. Road history repeats itself
The "Roads are Deplorably Bad" headline (which ran on the "This week in HISTORY" page of the July 4 issue of the Journal) could have been written today, July 6, 2009, a repeat of the 1909 headline!

Reynolds will bring back the ‘good old days’ of CSUS basketball
I commend and support (California State University, Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani and Dr. Milt Richard's) decision to hire Larry Reynolds as the new CSUS Head Basketball Coach. I have known Larry for over 35 years and can personally attest to his qualifications both as a basketball coach and a quality person. You have selected an outstanding individual to lead your student athletes and your basketball program to great heights.
Training center thriving due to community support

Council should spend time and energy on real problems
This is almost too funny. I'm starting to think that Turlock Council meetings are more entertaining than watching regular prime time shows. Lawmakers need to secure our children’s futures
Dear Turlock Journal, I was appalled and heart-broken when I heard about the governor's latest proposed budget. There will be even more teacher layoffs and larger class sizes if schools lose billions of dollars. Talented students may be unable to attend college if the Cal Grant program is axed. About 70,000 abused and neglected children will suffer if $200 million is cut from foster care programs. Lawmakers must do everything possible to minimize the severity ...

Mr. Cantatore, how long have you worked/lived in Turlock? The budget process (you referenced in your June 13 opinion piece, "Glass half full even if city coffers empty) may be arcane but it certainly hasn't ever been as difficult as it has been this year.

Flu shot research
Recent studies have revealed some statistics that suggest the flu shot is less effective and much more dangerous than was believed previously. Denair schools downfall much more complicated
The idea that Denair's Superintendent Edward Parraz was too compassionate to make hard decisions, and specifically didn't want to lay off employees and thus is mainly responsible for the district's financial problems, is not supported by the report generated by CPA Teresa Ryland who, as required by state law, examined the district's financial planning, status, and history. Turlock needs public gang database
Stanislaus County has between 10 and 12 thousand gang members, over 5,000 are documented gang members. To put these numbers into perspective, gang members in our community represent a higher number than the entire population of Denair, Del Rio, Westley, Grayson, Hickman, and Hughson combined.
