A generous community

Dear Editor, In this season of giving thanks, I would like to share a public thank you to everyone who helped to make Emanuel Medical Center's Legacy Circle fund drive such a success. The commitment of our many community and employee volunteers, and the generosity of our hundreds of donors, was truly inspiring. Together, they raised $1,007,000 during ...

What is happening to dedicated city employees?

The citizens of Turlock deserve some answers. Long-term employees of the City of Turlock just keep disappearing from their departments and jobs. There are no explanations, though often it seems that there are allegations made against them just before they are "unavailable for comment." What kind of 'back room deals' are being made by the City? Why is any of this happening? What kind of plans are being ...

Prescription pseudoephedrine policy

An op-ed article from the New York Times tilted "How to Kill the Meth Monster" written by a colleague of mine, Rob Bovett, district attorney in Lincoln County, Oregon, was recently released. Rob and I also serve as advisory board members for ONDCP's National Methamphetamine and Pharmaceutical Initiative (CMPI). We have been traveling around the country assisting states contemplating the implementation of policy that would return pseudoephedrine (PSE) ...

Advertising extreme

It's not very often that I agree with burdensome rules and regulations set up by government to stifle businesses. The "Business Balk" article printed in the Journal last week made me chuckle after I read statements from business owners suggesting they are hurting due to a local sign ordinance that has outlived its useful life. I agree with the City's sign ...

Congratulations to Turlock’s new council members

I would like to congratulate Councilman-Elect Dehart and Councilman-Elect White on their win and I wish them the best. To the people that not just gave me their vote but also their trust I want to say thank you and that words cannot describe how honored I am to have had your support. I presented to you who I am and intend to stay true to ...

Support Prop 24

On November 2nd, we have a chance to do what so many of us have been dreaming about. Follow the money, we've been told, well, that's what Proposition 24, the Tax Fairness Act is about. Though its opponents try to present it as a bad deal for small business and employees, in fact, it has nothing to do with small businesses. The loopholes this prop is attempting to repeal address only ...

Candidate clarifies platform

As a candidate for the Turlock City Council some of your readers may have gotten the impression that I am only interested in the homeless and transportation problems. On the contrary, I am convinced that the council must be adaptable to the hard times which we must face. I am interested in making it the most efficient and able to serve the greatest number of people for the greatest good.

Why you should vote “no” on Prop 19

On Nov. 2, voters have an important decision to make on whether to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. Backers would have you believe that legalization would do everything from shutting down cartels to reducing the prison population.

Extra mail weight carried with pleasure

With a heart full of gratitude, the city and rural letter carriers would like to thank the giving community of Turlock for donating over 6,000 pounds of cans and non-perishable food on May 11. Once again, and for the past 17 years, you have left your donations by your mailboxes putting a smile on our faces as we deliver your mail. A little extra weight in our mailbags was carried with pleasure, knowing that many ...

Start pedaling Turlock

May is National Bike Month - a perfect time for our community to recognize and celebrate all the benefits of bicycling. Bicycling keeps us healthy, carries us efficiently from point A to point B; saves us from high gas prices; and makes our air cleaner and our roads less congested. Bicycling is good for our community and helps address many of our most pressing societal and environmental problems. Bicycling is fun! Even though this week ...

Look before you drive

Editor, This letter is to the lady in the car who was making a right-hand turn from Heather Noel onto Colorado April 28 at 10:25 a.m. I was the gentleman in the SF Giants baseball cap and sweat pants who was about five steps into the crosswalk heading to the south side of Heather Noel. Your car didn't make a full stop and brushed against my leg. You looked up and saw me there ...

Love Turlock was a blessing

WOW! Was I ever blessed Saturday! I wish to thank Love Turlock for all the hard work they did on my front and back yard. God blessed me with the Love Turlock angels. They all worked hard on cleaning up my yard. Everyone of these sweet wonderful and loving people worked over three hours on making my yard beautiful again. I can't thank them enough. Dan Tallman was the project team leader. I have ...

Is Councilwoman Bublak fiscally conservative?

I have followed government actions and policies most of my life; to me it is imperative that we are aware of what decisions and actions are being made on our behalf. Currently I have a few concerns about our local government I feel should be addressed so the voting public can make more informed decision about those representing us. I am concerned when Turlock City Council member Amy Bublak seems to take credit ...

Sen. Cannella encouraged by immigration reform resolution

Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) issued the following statement regarding the passage of Senate Joint Resolution 8 (SJR 8), which encourages immigration reform at the federal level: "There is no questioning that our immigration system is broken. We must deal with immigration directly in a compassionate and practical manner. It is inconceivable to think we can deport 12 million undocumented immigrants, many of which have lived most of their lives here paying taxes, working, ...

Thank you for warm welcome

As a recent visitor to your community I wanted to write to share my appreciation for the warm welcome we received. This past weekend, I, along with our university softball team traveled to Turlock from Canada to participate in the Cal State Stanislaus Tournament of Champions. It has been a number of years since our team has participated in this event and given our experience this year I am confident we will return again ...

Flu shot research

Recent studies have revealed some statistics that suggest the flu shot is less effective and much more dangerous than was believed previously. In 2010, a review of 50 flu vaccine studies concluded: "Under ideal conditions (vaccine completely matching circulating viral configuration) 33 healthy adults must be vaccinated to avoid one set of influenza symptoms. In average conditions (partially matching vaccine) 100 people must be vaccinated to avoid one set of influenza symptoms. <p ...

Remembering patriotism

As a child, patriotism was instilled by our parents, church and school. We revered and respected the flag. Nearly every house flew a flag on holidays, and, businesses daily. Last Memorial Day I noticed only two houses on my street flew a flag. Neither was mine. I felt ashamed. The following day I bought a flag. I wonder how many other people are like me; enjoying our daily life without regard to those ...

Denair schools downfall much more complicated

The idea that Denair's Superintendent Edward Parraz was too compassionate to make hard decisions, and specifically didn't want to lay off employees and thus is mainly responsible for the district's financial problems, is not supported by the report generated by CPA Teresa Ryland who, as required by state law, examined the district's financial planning, status, and history. Her job was to determine how Denair became one of seven districts out of 1,107 in California ...

College district representatives know their communities

Editor: This letter is in reference to an article published in the Turlock Journal on March 20, written by Dennis Wyatt: "College Districts need to put education first, jobs second." I am not disputing his opinion in the article regarding consolations of community college districts, but I feel he needs to get out from behind his computer if he is going to make statements about local Representatives. The part that I resent is ...

Public given ample time to comment on State Water Board proposal

I think it is important to clarify how important public comment is to the State Water Resources Control Board during this review process for proposed amendments to the 2006 Bay Delta Plan. Unfortunately, our efforts to conduct an open, transparent workshop and process were mischaracterized in statements made in a recent story published in the Turlock Journal. Our workshop is scheduled to begin on March 20 and continuing to March 21, ...

Long road to honor Turlock skater

I would like to tell you about another extraordinary young man who came out of Turlock about the same time as Colin Kaepernick. His name is Brandon Koch and he was an avid skateboarder, loving son, brother, friend and nephew and all around good guy. He was always there for anyone who needed him. Two articles have appeared in the Turlock Journal. The first is dated April 28, 2012, and the second August 15, ...

Turlock needs public gang database

Stanislaus County has between 10 and 12 thousand gang members, over 5,000 are documented gang members. To put these numbers into perspective, gang members in our community represent a higher number than the entire population of Denair, Del Rio, Westley, Grayson, Hickman, and Hughson combined. There's no question we need to find solutions to our gang problem and it's time to get serious. We need a publicly accessible gang database similar to Megan's Law. ...

Editor, The Friends of the Turlock Library held its annual books sale and thanks in part to the outstanding and gracious coverage provided by the caring staff of the Turlock Journal (especially Ms. Sabra Stafford) our three-day used book sale was a resounding success.
