A good public education system is one of our country's great strengths. Unfortunately, I do not believe today's public education is as good as it once was or as good as it should be. There are many reasons for this and many are beyond local control. However, a reason some districts excel over other districts is undoubtedly the leadership, dedication and knowledge of their school boards.
Dear Editor, The Stanislaus County Farm Bureau Board of Directors proudly endorses Joe Alamo and Ron Macedo for seats on the Turlock Irrigation District Board of Directors. Water is our most important resource and powers our economic engine. When our farmers and ranchers prosper, our local communities prosper and our quality of life is enhanced. Agriculture injects nearly $10 billion into our local economies directly from crops and jobs in allied industries. The Turlock Irrigation ...
The recommendations in last week's H1N1 article are irresponsible, inaccurate and dangerous. According to the Physician's Desk Reference, the nasal influenza vaccine is associated with an increased risk of "Medically Attended Events," seen as asthma/reactive airway disease, in children under the age of 5 years.
America's preoccupation with reforming health care is misguided and futile. Social medicine by any name or statute is designed to make medical care more available to more people.
Don't let anyone try to convince you that universal health care won't work in America. Most developed countries have better health care systems than we have.
Dear Turlock Journal, This Saturday I will join thousands of Americans across the country in celebrating the 16th annual National Public Lands Day. The National Environmental Education Foundation estimates that over 100,000 volunteers nationwide will participate in this day by working to make our national forest and monuments, wildlife refuges and parks a better place by: planting trees, repairing trails, cleaning campsites and picking trash out of rivers and wetlands. For over 100 years, America's ...
I have never felt unsafe in Turlock, although I was not born here, I was raised here and have always thought it was one of the safest places to live. But that idea came to a stop on Sept. 22.
I am half Portuguese, part Norwegian and part Dutch. The sea is in my blood by heritage; football by birthright.
Turlock Scavenger Company gets (the) bid to take over waste management garbage routes in unincorporated areas. These unincorporated area residents get a lowed monthly rate. Can you believe it? Their rate (of) $20.92 (falls) to $18.65, that's a savings of $2.27.
Recently some of us who are dissatisfied with the local bus system went to Mr. (Roger) Fall, who manages the bus routes, and asked him to change the routes. He did not make a definite commitment, but he called two meetings on Sept. 23 at which time residents may air their grievances.
As I picked up the Turlock Journal Wednesday morning, the first thing that caught my eye was an article entitled "In God We Trust?" With great interest I opened up the newspaper and read the article and my heart sank.
Thank you so much for bringing the sad fact that there are no Sept. 11 remembrance events held in town to the attention of the citizens of Turlock. For years I have been asking why the schools have done nothing on the anniversary of 9-11 every year. For the first couple of years I even tried calling my sons' school (Pitman) and told them how disappointed I was and asked them to please consider changing their "same as any other day" attitude.
Dear Editor, This is what I see is going on behind the scenes in Turlock politics: 1. Mary Jackson asked "out-of-town developer" Mark Hall for the same campaign money he gave Amy Bublak and Kurt Vander Weide in the 2008 City Council elections. It was only after she was turned down that it became a campaign issue. Maybe someone should ask Jackson where the money came from to finance her campaign, from the behind the ...
I am sorry for what the Ybarra family must be going through since Anna Ybarra was arrested for embezzlement from the Turlock Youth Soccer Association.
As long as I've been a police officer, I've never gotten used to the sorrow I feel when I'm called to the scene of a crash where a young person has died due to impaired driving. Yet, this senseless loss of human life is a daily reality all over America - year after year.
With a heart full of gratitude, the city and rural letter carriers would like to thank the giving community of Turlock for donating over 6,000 pounds of cans and non-perishable food on May 11. Once again, and for the past 17 years, you have left your donations by your mailboxes putting a smile on our faces as we deliver your mail. A little extra weight in our mailbags was carried with pleasure, knowing that many ...
May is National Bike Month - a perfect time for our community to recognize and celebrate all the benefits of bicycling. Bicycling keeps us healthy, carries us efficiently from point A to point B; saves us from high gas prices; and makes our air cleaner and our roads less congested. Bicycling is good for our community and helps address many of our most pressing societal and environmental problems. Bicycling is fun! Even though this week ...
Editor, This letter is to the lady in the car who was making a right-hand turn from Heather Noel onto Colorado April 28 at 10:25 a.m. I was the gentleman in the SF Giants baseball cap and sweat pants who was about five steps into the crosswalk heading to the south side of Heather Noel. Your car didn't make a full stop and brushed against my leg. You looked up and saw me there ...
WOW! Was I ever blessed Saturday! I wish to thank Love Turlock for all the hard work they did on my front and back yard. God blessed me with the Love Turlock angels. They all worked hard on cleaning up my yard. Everyone of these sweet wonderful and loving people worked over three hours on making my yard beautiful again. I can't thank them enough. Dan Tallman was the project team leader. I have ...
I have followed government actions and policies most of my life; to me it is imperative that we are aware of what decisions and actions are being made on our behalf. Currently I have a few concerns about our local government I feel should be addressed so the voting public can make more informed decision about those representing us. I am concerned when Turlock City Council member Amy Bublak seems to take credit ...
Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) issued the following statement regarding the passage of Senate Joint Resolution 8 (SJR 8), which encourages immigration reform at the federal level: "There is no questioning that our immigration system is broken. We must deal with immigration directly in a compassionate and practical manner. It is inconceivable to think we can deport 12 million undocumented immigrants, many of which have lived most of their lives here paying taxes, working, ...
As a recent visitor to your community I wanted to write to share my appreciation for the warm welcome we received. This past weekend, I, along with our university softball team traveled to Turlock from Canada to participate in the Cal State Stanislaus Tournament of Champions. It has been a number of years since our team has participated in this event and given our experience this year I am confident we will return again ...
Recent studies have revealed some statistics that suggest the flu shot is less effective and much more dangerous than was believed previously. In 2010, a review of 50 flu vaccine studies concluded: "Under ideal conditions (vaccine completely matching circulating viral configuration) 33 healthy adults must be vaccinated to avoid one set of influenza symptoms. In average conditions (partially matching vaccine) 100 people must be vaccinated to avoid one set of influenza symptoms. <p ...
As a child, patriotism was instilled by our parents, church and school. We revered and respected the flag. Nearly every house flew a flag on holidays, and, businesses daily. Last Memorial Day I noticed only two houses on my street flew a flag. Neither was mine. I felt ashamed. The following day I bought a flag. I wonder how many other people are like me; enjoying our daily life without regard to those ...
The idea that Denair's Superintendent Edward Parraz was too compassionate to make hard decisions, and specifically didn't want to lay off employees and thus is mainly responsible for the district's financial problems, is not supported by the report generated by CPA Teresa Ryland who, as required by state law, examined the district's financial planning, status, and history. Her job was to determine how Denair became one of seven districts out of 1,107 in California ...
Editor: This letter is in reference to an article published in the Turlock Journal on March 20, written by Dennis Wyatt: "College Districts need to put education first, jobs second." I am not disputing his opinion in the article regarding consolations of community college districts, but I feel he needs to get out from behind his computer if he is going to make statements about local Representatives. The part that I resent is ...
I think it is important to clarify how important public comment is to the State Water Resources Control Board during this review process for proposed amendments to the 2006 Bay Delta Plan. Unfortunately, our efforts to conduct an open, transparent workshop and process were mischaracterized in statements made in a recent story published in the Turlock Journal. Our workshop is scheduled to begin on March 20 and continuing to March 21, ...
I would like to tell you about another extraordinary young man who came out of Turlock about the same time as Colin Kaepernick. His name is Brandon Koch and he was an avid skateboarder, loving son, brother, friend and nephew and all around good guy. He was always there for anyone who needed him. Two articles have appeared in the Turlock Journal. The first is dated April 28, 2012, and the second August 15, ...
Stanislaus County has between 10 and 12 thousand gang members, over 5,000 are documented gang members. To put these numbers into perspective, gang members in our community represent a higher number than the entire population of Denair, Del Rio, Westley, Grayson, Hickman, and Hughson combined. There's no question we need to find solutions to our gang problem and it's time to get serious. We need a publicly accessible gang database similar to Megan's Law. ...
Editor, The Friends of the Turlock Library held its annual books sale and thanks in part to the outstanding and gracious coverage provided by the caring staff of the Turlock Journal (especially Ms. Sabra Stafford) our three-day used book sale was a resounding success. A healthy number of book buyers who filled out a questionnaire form checked the box "Turlock Journal" when asked where or how they found out about our book ...
