Carnegie vote success for council, arts community, city

Congratulations to the Turlock City Council for passing the construction of the Carnegie Arts Center by 5-0 vote Tuesday night. After over 10 years of squabbling and turf battles between the City and the arts community, this council set-up a subcommittee including: Mayor John Lazar and Council member Amy Bublak to develop a Carnegie concept that all members of the council could accept and support. Ms. Bublak took the lead in working with the Arts ...

It’s a GREENgos silent spring

In the not so golden state anymore, if you stop and listen you'll notice it's quieter. You'll see more cars and trucks smoking and running on plastic factory spares. The once constant drone of traffic and commercial activity is giving way to a silence of the lambs.

Howze’s love-hate relationship

We've read of a "love-hate" relationship between Turlock City Council member Ted Howze and Mayor John Lazar. It seems Mr. Howze has taken the "hate" part to a new level in his March 24 letter to the editor.

Community should boycott Sarah Palin

Dear Editor, I was appalled when I read that Sarah Palin will be the featured speaker at the 50th anniversary of CSU Stanislaus. This is a woman who has repeatedly celebrated ignorance, repeatedly used hate speech on the campaign trail and told lies about health care reform such as the infamous "death panel" claim. This is a woman who did not complete her elected term as governor of Alaska. Why is this woman speaking at ...

Hughson councilmembers should avoid costs of recall and resign now

The story "Hughson city employees cry 'hostile work environment,'" which ran in the April 3 issue of the Journal, articulates well the employees' complaints which were investigated and found to be without merit and unfounded. The rest of the article voiced Hughson City Council members Thom Crowder and Ben Manley's views, which is fine if you like to hear half a story. The citizens of Hughson want any employee, manager or council member removed if ...

Ideological balance

Now that the Sarah Palin event is sold out, the California State University, Stanislaus Foundation should announce another event for two weeks before or after the Palin event with a guest speaker such as Howard Dean or Rachel Maddow. This would achieve ideological balance and raise even more funds for scholarships.

Mayor Lazar is an honest businessman

Dear Editor, I very strongly disagree with Ted Howze's comments in his March 24 Turlock Journal letter to the editor. I, in particular, take it personally that Ted accuses Mayor Lazar of corruption due to his professional involvement as a real estate agent in regards to the Vintage Lounge project. For 33 years, Coldwell Banker Endsley & Associates real estate agents have very actively exercised our motto, "Service with Integrity." John Lazar has been affiliated ...

Shame on Ted Howze with his mud slinging. Looks like he is angling to run for mayor. - Julia Roberts

Howze’s comments are self-serving

I am writing this letter in response to Mr. Ted Howze's letter to the editor, published in the March 24 issue of the Turlock Journal.

The attacks have begun

The bow shot that Turlock City Council member Ted Howze has let loose in his opinion piece in the Turlock Journal's Wednesday paper, signals the opening of candidate season. As we all remember from the previous two City Council contests, Mr. Howze's vituperous, vicious, decidedly uncivil attacks on his perceived opponent were masterpieces of bullying. Not wishing to disappoint us, he begins anew.

Accountability is the issue

For more than a year a majority of the Turlock City Council remained silent as to the reasons why former city manager Tim Kerr was fired. With the city's recent filing of a countersuit against Mr. Kerr, many of those reasons became public. I was one of three votes on the Council who chose to terminate the former city manager for reasons listed in the cross complaint which, by the process of being filed in ...

Tax payers should not have to pay for another dog park

Now the City of Turlock, which is evidently hemorrhaging money, wants to build another dog park!

Donnelly Park wildlife should be protected

I was appalled to learn of the animal (i.e. seagull) abuse that occurred last week at Donnelly Park.

Christianson and his department have lowered crime rates

It was very disturbing to me to read letters from readers who are either ill informed or have a concealed political motive to injure the integrity and good name of individuals. With the election for sheriff coming up this year, I'm sure there will be those who will make many misguided and false comments about harassment at the Sheriff's Department. Their hope is to confuse the voters in hopes that their unknown candidate can steal the election.

Lowering gas prices and putting our nation on a path to energy independence

In the last week alone Californians have seen gas prices skyrocket to a state-wide average of $4.67 per gallon - a state record and currently the highest in the nation. Problems with pipelines and a power outage at one of the state's few remaining refineries exacerbated already tight fuel supplies causing the spike. But why has California's ability to meet the demand for gasoline - something needed by virtually every mom driving her kids to ...

We need to reduce the nuclear weapons threat

Fifty years ago this week, the world woke up to a crisis that brought the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of a cataclysmic nuclear war. Today, the U.S. continues to have over 5,000 nuclear weapons and five additional countries have become nuclear weapon states since 1962. Our current strategy is not working. We need bold action to move the world towards the elimination of these deadly weapons. Only through mutual, ...

White House, Congress failing to live up to responsibilities

According to dictionary.com a popular definition of sequestration is removal or separation. Although the term sequestration is being bandied about in relation to massive defense cuts that threaten our nation's military readiness, I prefer the term "divorce," because that is exactly what our elected leaders are doing with the Constitution that they have sworn to uphold. While there are many important issues for candidates to address during this campaign season, the bottom line is ...

Everyone has the right to freedom of speech

Several weeks ago, we decided to show support for the presidential candidate of our choice by placing a yard sign in our front yard. The night before last, someone tagged it by spray painting a red circle with a line through it on both sides of the sign. We decided we would keep the sign to show that this act of vandalism would not deter us from showing our support. Apparently, the person ...

Read the props and then decide

Red alert; unions are lying to you again. They will say or do anything to keep the state of California politicos in their pockets. I talked to a group of ladies wearing pins that said "no on proposition 32" and "yes on proposition 30." I asked them if they had read the propositions and they said no but the union said they would lose $500 per month if proposition 30 isn't passed and ...

Shame on TID line workers

To the editor: Shame, shame on the IBEW union line workers who all mysteriously "disappeared" during the recent TID power failure. That nasty old "flu bug" always seems to hit union members when the public is most vulnerable, but that's the idea, isn't it? That "virus" even hit Modesto and Merced irrigation workers, even a crew all the way from Visalia. Powerful bug, that. The union didn't give a rat's behind ...

Whatever you’ve heard about California's dairy situation, it’s worse

Word of mouth in the dairy industry has been spreading the bad news for months about how things are in California. But no matter what you've heard, it's worse. Yes, there is a financial catastrophe underway. Everyone who milks cows there is losing money. Whatever equity was rebuilt after the 2009 collapse is going up in flames again. The bonfire isn't as big this time, though, because there isn't nearly as much to burn. ...

We don’t need another green politician

While putting gas into my car today at $4.82/gal, I started thinking about congressional candidate Jose Hernandez. The last thing we need is another green politician in public office. Like President Obama, he tows the party line for experimental green energy instead of striving to achieve energy independence through domestic oil, gas, natural gas and clean coal. Again like Obama, Hernandez favors dragging the economy over the fiscal cliff into a deeper ...

From 36 to 92 days in a month

Yes, it's me again. I hope you are all paying attention to your water bills before you pay them. Last year I wrote a letter to the editor complaining about some 36 day billing periods that cost us extra those months because we went over our monthly gallon allotment. I heard about the reason the city used to explain away the problem last year, and I read the recent article in the ...

Califia deserves a place of honor

It is my understanding that moving our "Califia" statue is being considered. I recall going to see our new statue in 2004 I believe, and frankly I was appalled at the location selected. There wasn't enough space to step back to absorb the wonderful details, design, colors and craftsmanship executed by the artist Donna Billick of Davis. As far as I am concerned, "Califia" is truly a work of art and as ...

Reflections on 9/11

Eleven years ago, on the clear morning of September 11th, 2001, the men and women that went to work at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and those that boarded United flights 93 and 175, and American Airlines flights 11 and 77, did not know the tragic fate that lay before them. The victims of 9/11 were sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers. They had dreams, they had plans for their future, and ...

Denham: Fully engaged public servant

It is impressive the legislation that Congressman Jeff Denham has authored or cosponsored on a variety of issues during his first term. One such item is his bipartisan Veteran Skills to Jobs Act (H.R. 4155), having passed into law, and will create a skill certification process that will help vets secure good jobs. Mr. Denham also sponsored H.AMDT 1367 to H.R 5972, an amendment to prohibit the use of funds to be used for ...

We need to work together to solve cat problem

A low-cost spay and neuter clinic is needed immediately in our town of Turlock. There are abandoned and feral cats everywhere, on the street, in the neighborhood, in parking lots of shopping areas and restaurants. They are starving and multiplying rapidly and it can only get worse. We need to take responsibility immediately and do the right thing. I do not like to think of thousands of cats being euthanized and cremated every ...

Good work on bus hub

I am very impressed with Turlock's new bus hub located at Golden State Boulevard and Hawkeye. During the early quiet hours this Sunday I took the time to take photographs from all sides. The landscaping is first class and the entire bus hub is really classy looking. I love the tall black "Turlock" clock. I took photos of the clock and the plaque dedicating the hub. The two colorful Turlock Regional Transit ...
