Howze decides which kids are worthy of safe recreation

Turlock City Councilman Ted Howze has struck again! He proposes cutting all summer swim programs at the Turlock High and Pitman High schools. He calls the current programs "the biggest money loser in the entire recreation department." He also disagreed with Councilwoman Mary Jackson that these pools afforded children a safe place to swim and recreate during our 105 degree summers. He wishes to "force" everybody to use Columbia Pool. This means ...

Children of Turlock deserve a safe place to swim

Thank you Turlock City Council for allowing two more weeks to hopefully get the community to rally around keeping at least one more pool open for recreation swimming.

Older teachers are better at their jobs

Teachers are evaluated by school administrators. School administrators are generally either failed teachers who were excellent sycophants or persons who have never taught a day in their lives. Teacher evaluations are based upon your sycophantic abilities, the church you attend, whom you are related to, what your current social status in the community is, and other unmentionable criteria. <span style="font-size: 12pt; ...

Apology was warranted

At Tuesday's meeting of the Turlock City Council, I issued a personal apology to members of the city's finance staff for a statement made in my opinion editorial to the Turlock Journal. I would like to clarify the facts involved and why an apology was the right thing to do.

Councilman Howze makes unsubstantiated claims

Editor, I am greatly concerned by the incendiary and malicious tone of Turlock City Council member Ted Howze's letter of May 21. Accounting and budgeting for insurance reserves is a complex and challenging task. Estimates and projections about future events are required. It is likely that an over or under provision will occur when doing this work. It is not proof ...

The truth behind the city’s ‘found’ money

Turlock's residents and our city employees deserve to know the truth about the millions of general fund dollars "found" stashed away in a series of special holding funds that covers the city's state unemployment, workers compensation and health insurance costs. In reality, the money was never "lost" to begin with. There are individuals within city staff who knew the funds existed and that they held ...

Enough is enough

I am thoroughly disgusted with the California Legislature. I believe the public should and does have the right to be irate about this situation of passing a budget on time. I am 69 years old and I cannot remember the last time a budget was passed on time.

Student health services top notch

Though I am covered by a "Cadillac" insurance plan with Kaiser, I choose to frequent the Student Health Center at California State University, Stanislaus. I called to book an appointment with Kaiser recently, and there was a three week wait to see my doctor. I would be charged a $20 co-pay at the time of the appointment and would be charged between $20 and $30 for my prescription. Disappointed, I ...

Digitizing best left to Lundrigan

As the Stanislaus County Assessor I know that digitizing documents is both time consuming and costly. It takes thorough research, planning, and execution to get the best results at a reasonable cost to taxpayers. Because I meet on a regular basis with the County Clerk-Recorder Lee Lundrigan, I know that she has already started this time consuming process. It may be easy for her opponent to say that he plans ...

Teachers continue to work towards excellence, despite obstacles

With the budget crisis, teacher lay-offs, low test scores, and struggling students and schools… we can still continue to find something positive! Turlock Unified School District's Instructional Coaches offered a voluntary staff development that was targeted to meet the instructional needs of teachers and learning needs of all students. The reception of teachers "choosing" to attend on their own time was amazing, especially now, when teachers are finishing benchmark ...

AB 32 will help drive a sustainable economic recovery

Just a few years after passing AB 32, our state's challenge to reach a clean energy future, a handful of reactionaries in Sacramento (including Sen. Jeff Denham) are trying to repeal it, a move that will create economic uncertainty for thousands of businesses and stymie billions of dollars of investment in solar, wind, and other clean tech projects in the Central Valley. ...

Where is the partnership?

Editor, It is with great disappointment I have read the recent comments of the Turlock Unified School Board and District Office in the papers. By their comments, it appears they have already made up their minds as to what they intend to do. They intend to impose a 2 percent salary cut on employees and ignore other effective cost cutting measures such as furloughs. <p style="margin: ...

Thanks for honoring Brandon Koch

An open letter to: Mayor (John) Lazar, Turlock City Councilmembers Amy Bublak, Bill DeHart, Jr., Forrest White and Mary Jackson; Turlock Parks and Recreation manager Allison Van Guilder and Eric Schultz; Turlock Journal editor and staff; business owners, citizens and friends and family of my nephew, Brandon Koch. As you all know, we lost someone very special recently. Adrenocortical cancer is very rare and although studied, no one has found a cure or ...

Prop. 32: Deceptive and outrageous

Coming soon to California schools near you: larger classes, fewer courses, and an end to sports and arts programs. All of this and much worse could come to pass after Nov. 6 if voters approve Prop. 32, a deceptive and outrageous initiative which would empower corporations, Super PACs and the wealthy to control California. That would spell disaster for public education and the state as a whole. Prop. 32, the Special Exemptions ...

Pit bulls on the loose

Dear editor, It's a sad state of affairs when you are in your own yard and two young pit bulls, without collars or license, come into your yard and kill four beautiful little kittens. My poor daughter had to stand there and watch this devastation, and when she started out there to help they chased her back in the house. Luckily, she got back in safely or they would have attacked her. ...

Hope for young generation

I want to thank the two young men who found my wallet in a cart at Walmart. They refused a reward but they can't know how much they restored my thoughts of the younger generation. Thanks again. - Bonnie Renteria

Reflections on Wisconsin

Ana and I attended the vigil at the Sikh temple in Turlock on Friday evening. It was a solemn ceremony, with the participation of most of the Turlock Sikh community and of the city's elected leadership.

A wasted opportunity

Dear Editor, I was disappointed to read in Saturday's paper that Erin Nelson, who just completed a world tour on bicycle, found nothing to admire in the multitude of countries she visited. I find it disturbing that someone with that kind of opportunity couldn't embrace the cultures of the places she visited and came back home with as narrow a mind as she left with. As our country and hundreds of others compete in ...

Vote for Nascimento; you won’t be sorry

To The Editor: Even though I am not from Turlock (I am from Merced), I felt compelled to write a few comments and observations that I have on behalf of Steve Nascimento, who is running for City Council. I can only say how lucky the citizens of your community will be if Steve is elected. Many times I had to contact Steve on behalf of friends who had struggled with Social Security issues ...

Fair incident reaffirms faith in humanity

Dear Editor, A recent experience at the Stanislaus County Fair has given me affirmation that there are still people who are being raised the right way. After enjoying a few carnival rides and games with my son and wife, we were ready to grab a bite to eat. To my horror, when I reached for my wallet, it was gone. Immediately thinking someone had stolen it, I was panicked and upset. My ...

Enough is enough

Please help me here. We are in the worst recession in years, and the city of Turlock has in last few years built a multi-million dollar fire station, police station, art center, and a transportation center. A few meetings ago the council talked about an increase in the sales tax. Now I know government folks like to have legacies, but this is a little over the top. They are acting like the donkeys ...

‘True Tea Party’ makes surprise endorsement

Tea Party activists made history in recent years and our movement will continue to shape the nation's future. To fully promote our conservative principles, we at the True Tea Party wish to explain our endorsement in the presidential race. Tea Party groups revere the Constitution and only one candidate has pledged to fully support Americans' Constitutional rights. That candidate is Barack Obama. The president favors abortion rights and permitting both straight and gay ...

Worst parade in years

I just experienced the worst 4th of July celebration in Turlock in years. The Turlock parade lasted just 27 minutes. I invited friends and relatives from out of town to see the parade and was so embarrassed when the last car said "that's it." I've run into other locals who tried to attend the Turlock parade but ended up going home because it was already over when they arrived. I suggest that you ...

Keep county fair a real fair

A better way to solve the problem of overcrowding (of livestock at the Stanislaus County Fair) would be to have the judging before the fair starts if necessary. Then allow each 4-H and FFA club to exhibit a predetermined number of animals including their sale animals. Keep the county fair a real fair. In my younger life time I have shown dairy cattle ...

Poor decision by fair board

In case you don't know yet, Stanislaus County Fair is NOT having a Christian artist come this year to do a concert at the fair as they have in the past few years. Certainly it can't be because the performances by Christian artists have been poorly attended. Actually it is the opposite. When the Christian artists have come, the Christian community packed the place out and many followed up by letting the fair people ...

Thank you for supporting our libraries

On June 5, Stanislaus County voters reaffirmed their support of Stanislaus County Libraries. Nearly 82 percent of voters said yes to libraries, renewing until 2018 the tiny 1/8 of a penny sales tax that supports our libraries! We would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to ensure the passage of Measure T. All 13 Friends of the Library groups and the Stanislaus Library Foundation gave countless hours advocating for libraries and ...
