AB 656 would be disastrous for California’s job market

Dear Editor: This letter is in response to the Jan. 11 story: "University Students have mixed opinions on AB 656." The story focuses on the creation of the California Higher Education Endowment Corporation. However, it fails to recognize the devastating effects a 12.5 percent oil severance tax, the source of the corporation's funding, would have on California's economy. The story claims that California "is the only state in the nation without an oil severance tax." ...

Health is a priority

What is more important, public health care or public education? If you are a healthy child with caring parents, you could walk to the library and self-educate yourself. For example, Abraham Lincoln.

Drugs violate my pursuit of happiness

On Jan. 12, 2010, Assemblyman Tom Ammiano's bill AB-390 will be voted on by the Public Safety Committee. If it passes, it's scheduled to move on to the Public Heath Committee the very same day.

Answers to vaccine questions

Dear Editor, In answer to the letter about vaccinations which ran in the Dec. 16 Journal, I can offer some answers to the questions. The simple answer to the question, "Did the 98 million doses contaminated with SV40 lead to the HIV epidemic 25 years later?" is no. SV40 is a simian (monkey) virus and often shows no symptoms when monkeys are infected. It is not a human virus like HIV and the comparison of ...

A few questions for vaccine advocates

If vaccines are as safe and effective as our government and vaccine proponents claim, answering these questions will be easy and reassuring.

The middle class is going, going...

I was listening and reading about the plight of yet another successful industry going out of business - the dairy industry. Dairy folks receive generous subsidies, but still aren't protected against mountains of regulations or imports. What really is happening it that the corporations want all those cows to be corporate cows and some poor guy from Paraguay to come in and do all the work of taking care of dairy cows then get lost.

City council not respectful of citizens’ Debely concerns

I am concerned about the impact that an estimated 3.75 fold increase in the use of Joe Debely Stadium will have on the adjacent neighborhood. So, for the first time in a long time, I attended a meeting of the Turlock City Council on Dec. 1. Based on what I witnessed and experienced there, I now have much greater concerns.

Further cuts to arts classes would be devastating

It may have come to your attention that there have been, and still are, drastic budget cuts considered for the arts at California State University, Stanislaus. As a Piano Performance major, I would be extremely devastated if such a thing would be allowed to happen. If these budget cuts were allowed to happen, all private lessons (meaning one-on-one time with an instructor specifically for that instrument) would be canceled, because nearly all instruments taught at ...

City funds should go towards roads, not arts

Dear Editor, I am a little confused as to why we would be talking about spending millions of dollars on the rebuilding of an art center, when many have written over and over again to the Journal regarding the need for repairing our streets and roads that are in terrible condition. I don't understand why there has not been an explanation to the citizens of this community regarding our street problem. Please someone, give us ...

Shirvani has been a good leader during tough times

The current economic recession has financially impacted our entire community. Businesses, families, local governments and our local university, CSU Stanislaus, have been significantly impacted. Tough decisions have been required of all our leaders. Unfortunately, these decisions are necessary in order to ensure the continued viability of our local businesses, governments, and the university.

Don’t ignore over 100 years of medical knowledge

Dear Editor, Louis Pasteur died in 1895 and Robert Koch died in 1910. Their great works were done in the 1860s through the 1890s. What they knew 120 to 150 years ago was nothing compared to what we know now. Dave Dubyak uses their foundational, but primitive understanding to try to "not to single out each vaccine, but to educate people of their dangers and to advocate effective alternatives." He claims that, "Germs are the ...

A surprise encounter

Recently, I was shopping at Orchard Supply Hardware for electrical supplies when I had a problem. At age 85 my joints and muscles limit what I can physically do. The electrical PVC elbows that I needed were far back in the bottom bin. I tried to stretch my limbs to reach them. I knew that if I slid down to the floor, I would not be able to get up. What can I do? I ...

A new era

Turlock now seems to have entered into a new era. It is one of big city politics with all the earmarks and unwarranted spending that accompanies self-interested politicians. This is ever more apparent with the recent action that the city council has taken. The council has advocated and decided to allow for the misappropriation of Redevelopment Agency funds to remodel the football stadium at Turlock High School. It was an effort headed by Councilman Ted ...

Diseases are caused by poor lifestyle choices, not germs

Dear Editor, Thank you for this opportunity to reveal the truth, not create it. Thank you to Eric Julien for your response to my recent letter, and here is mine. The intent of my letter is not to single out each vaccine, but to educate people of their dangers and to advocate effective alternatives. The germ theory is what all vaccination programs are predicated upon. Even Louis Pasture, famous for his promotion of this idea ...

Vaccination articles are a benefit to the community

David Dubyak accused the Turlock Journal of rubberstamping the flu shot recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institute of Health in his recent letter to the editor. I have been reading the series of science related articles, published on Saturdays, and authored by Dr. E. Kirsten Peters in your editorial page. I suspect, based on your inclusion of these articles, that your action was an intelligent choice, rather than a rubberstamp.

Attention law-abiding pet owners: Big Brother is watching so act accordingly

Otis is my 3-year-old cat, a neutered and fully-vaccinated male that we rescued at five days of age after abandonment by his mother. Other than when crated for veterinarian visits, Otis and his sibling have spent their entire lives indoors. While scores of semi-feral, possibly diseased cats roam our neighborhood and use my flowers for a toilet, my cats have no interactions with my neighbors. Imagine my surprise when I learned Turlock officials ...

Whelan can help local farmers in Congress

Dear Editor, After looking at the three candidates running for the 16th District, Brian Whelan would be the best candidate for the House of Representatives. He is the only candidate which resides in the District in which he is running. Whelan is educated and is currently a lawyer, and he has helped several farmers in court. The lack of water made him want to be a Congressman in Washington, D.C. With his ...

We need your books

Editor: The citizens of Turlock are fighting hard to get "Yes on T" passed, Save Stanislaus Libraries and all of Turlock will benefit if the measure is passed. Make sure you get out and vote. Even though there is no formal opposition we still need you to mark your ballot. Not voting will allow the measure to fail. Small tax, big benefits

Since its founding the American Association of University Women has been dedicated to promoting educational opportunities for all. For the past 100 years the Stanislaus County Public Library system has played a vital role in providing those opportunities in our community. AAUW strongly supports voting "Yes" on Measure T on the June ballot. In 1994 the voters of Stanislaus County had the wisdom to pass a 1/8 cent sales tax dedicated solely to ...

Death of local education decision making

They're at it again. Many of the people who brought us the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act in 2001 are back. Prepare yourself for the nightmare of the Common Core Standards. American schools have witnessed an 11 year federal takeover of education and mandatory standardized testing with "drill and kill" test preparation. Drop-out rates for at-risk students remained high as school became more and more meaningless to these students who usually live in our ...

City trouble

I have lived in the same home for over 50 years. It was passed down to me by my parents. I have always paid my taxes and tried to be a good neighbor. Now the city has forced me to be homeless. My troubles started in 2003, after I became disabled. The city cited me under its nuisance ordinance. They said I had to clean up my yard and trim my trees. Unfortunately, ...

Yes on T needs your support

Editor: Citizens of Turlock should not feel a sense of "security" with all the Yes on T signs that are posted throughout our city and all the positive feedback from the papers and local businesses. Although there is no organized opposition (who would want a library closed?) Turlock citizens still have to go to their voting site, cast your ...

Only by preventing autoimmune diseases can we truly be healthy

This letter concerns the article by Dr. Kirsten Peters regarding celiac disease and gluten allergies. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases are increasing exponentially and include dozens of very debilitating diseases. Celiac Sprue dermatitis, chronic fatigue syndrome, Crohn's disease, fibromyalgia, juvenile arthritis, Lou Gehrig's disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, and ulcerative colitis are some of the most familiar examples. All these and many more are epidemic ...

We support area teachers

We retired teachers appreciate the efforts of those in the classrooms today. California Retired Teachers Stanislaus Division #38, through their Active Teacher Awards committee, distributed supplies to many teachers this past year. Schools included are Modesto City's Downey and Johansen high schools, Sipherd, Orville Wright, and Capistrano elementary schools; Waterford Middle School; Denair's Gratton School; Ceres' Mae Hensley Junior High School and Whitmore Charter School; and Turlock's Julien, Wakefield, and Osborn elementary schools, ...

Thank God Warrior Day is cancelled

Dear Editor, In response to the article, "Warrior Day cancelled," all I can say is thank God. We live close to the university, we have for five year. Now, I must say, we are looking for a new place to live. Warrior Day, in my opinion, is like War Day to our family. It's louder than anyone could imagine. For years now we have went before the City Council due to ...

Future bright for downtown

In her recent editorial, Kristina Hacker asks "whatever happened to Turlock's bridal district?" It is a good question, and in fact, she partially answers it herself. Whether or not the concept was a good idea, the timing could not have been worse. Launched in January 2008 at a time when vacancies downtown were near zero, the Turlock Downtown Property Owner's Association attempted to create a long term vision for downtown to attract new businesses and ...

School medical program needs community support

Dear Editor, Thank you for your story on the Delhi JAMS (Junior Academy of Medical Sciences) program published Saturday, March 10. I'm Eloisa Fuentes, the physician who was mentioned in the piece. I'm writing to give due credit for the inception of the JAMS program to Delhi's former superintendent Mr. Baltazar. Gray should watch his endorsements

Dear Editor, I noticed a few oddities while looking at the website of State Assembly candidate Adam Gray. It was Mr. Gray's list of endorsers that intrigued me the most. The list includes numerous legislators, mostly from the Bay Area and Southern California. The most interesting of these is State Senator Leland Yee of San Francisco. This is the same Leland Yee who launched a nasty campaign of political harassment last year ...

Freedom of religion ignored in federal health plan mandates

On Friday, January 20, 2012, the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) ruled that virtually all private health plans will be required to include sterilization and contraceptives, including abortion inducing drugs. A very restricted "religious exemption" is granted to religious groups only if they are serving people of the same belief in a very narrow setting such as a parish and employ people of their own faith. However, the Catholic Church in ...
