Carnegie vote success for council, arts community, city
Congratulations to the Turlock City Council for passing the construction of the Carnegie Arts Center by 5-0 vote Tuesday night. It’s a GREENgos silent spring
In the not so golden state anymore, if you stop and listen you'll notice it's quieter. You'll see more cars and trucks smoking and running on plastic factory spares. The once constant drone of traffic and commercial activity is giving way to a silence of the lambs.

Hughson councilmembers should avoid costs of recall and resign now
The story "Hughson city employees cry 'hostile work environment,'" which ran in the April 3 issue of the Journal, articulates well the employees' complaints which were investigated and found to be without merit and unfounded. Ideological balance
Now that the Sarah Palin event is sold out, the California State University, Stanislaus Foundation should announce another event for two weeks before or after the Palin event with a guest speaker such as Howard Dean or Rachel Maddow. This would achieve ideological balance and raise even more funds for scholarships.
Mayor Lazar is an honest businessman
Dear Editor, I very strongly disagree with Ted Howze's comments in his March 24 Turlock Journal letter to the editor. I, in particular, take it personally that Ted accuses Mayor Lazar of corruption due to his professional involvement as a real estate agent in regards to the Vintage Lounge project. Howze’s comments are self-serving
I am writing this letter in response to Mr. Ted Howze's letter to the editor, published in the March 24 issue of the Turlock Journal.
The attacks have begun
The bow shot that Turlock City Council member Ted Howze has let loose in his opinion piece in the Turlock Journal's Wednesday paper, signals the opening of candidate season. As we all remember from the previous two City Council contests, Mr. Howze's vituperous, vicious, decidedly uncivil attacks on his perceived opponent were masterpieces of bullying. Not wishing to disappoint us, he begins anew.
Accountability is the issue
For more than a year a majority of the Turlock City Council remained silent as to the reasons why former city manager Tim Kerr was fired. With the city's recent filing of a countersuit against Mr. Kerr, many of those reasons became public. Now the City of Turlock, which is evidently hemorrhaging money, wants to build another dog park!

I was appalled to learn of the animal (i.e. seagull) abuse that occurred last week at Donnelly Park.
Christianson and his department have lowered crime rates
It was very disturbing to me to read letters from readers who are either ill informed or have a concealed political motive to injure the integrity and good name of individuals. With the election for sheriff coming up this year, I'm sure there will be those who will make many misguided and false comments about harassment at the Sheriff's Department. Their hope is to confuse the voters in hopes that their unknown candidate can steal the election.

Libraries important resource for adults, children
I am writing you in support of the Hilmar Library and all that it has to offer to the community. It is important to stop the reduction of hours and possible future closure of the Hilmar Library.
Vote ‘yes’ for libraries
It is very disheartening to read the Turlock Journal article, "Save our library," that ran on July 13. The news item announced that because of budget cuts further reductions were necessary in the Hilmar and Merced County area. The Hilmar library would be open only 20 hours a week, down from 32 hours a week last fall.
Fireworks should be seen, not heard
I enjoy fireworks as much as anyone else. However, fireworks should be "visual!" What I am against is the purchase of fireworks with the "big bang" noise that sounds like a military assault.

Despite recent reports, Denair very patriotic
The Denair First Amendment issue does not want to go away. The good that came out of the incident, the reaffirmation by the district that students have a civil right to fly a flag at school was tainted by a recent district memo which seemed to deny responsibility for the situation.
