Turlock needs public gang database

Stanislaus County has between 10 and 12 thousand gang members, over 5,000 are documented gang members. To put these numbers into perspective, gang members in our community represent a higher number than the entire population of Denair, Del Rio, Westley, Grayson, Hickman, and Hughson combined.

We need to show Kap and family our support

Although local businesses are stepping up and showing Colin their support, does the City of Turlock have anything in the works, to show this young man and his family, the support they truly deserve?

We need a Kaepernick Day parade

I would like to suggest that the City of Turlock have a "Colin Kaepernick Day" that includes a parade down Main Street, with Kaep as the Grand Marshall and his parents riding in a car behind him. I believe this would show Kaep just how proud Turlock is of him. I'm quite sure that some of his team mates would come to Turlock with him.

Starbucks customers go above and beyond to help foster youth

Whenever anyone tries to tell me that people have "lost the spirit of the season," I only need to tell them about the holiday gift drive that my agency, Aspiranet, participates in each year with Starbucks in the Turlock area. For the past four years, we've had the amazing good fortune to impact the lives of thousands of foster youth because of this special partnership that helps collect thousands of gifts at hundreds of Starbucks locations throughout California. This year, in partnership with nearly 300 Starbucks stores across the state, we were able to collect and distribute 4,500 ...

Volunteers make Christmas special for less fortunate and lonely

On behalf of Turlock Together and the Turlock Salvation Army, I wish to thank all of the volunteers and donors who so generously contributed time, money, foodstuffs, drinks, linens and other materials that once again helped make this year's free Christmas dinner such a special day for more than 1,000 of our community's less fortunate and lonely.

Thank you for your generosity

Once again Mr. and Mrs. Claus left the North Pole to hand out many of the toys that the wonderful people of Turlock donated this year through the Post Office. (Without) you, many of our less fortunate children in the community would have gone without a toy this Christmas.

Cheerleaders too racy for parade

My family and I attended the Turlock Christmas parade. This is an annual event for us and we usually enjoy it to the fullest. This year was quite the opposite when the Stanislaus State cheerleaders came parading by with their behinds hanging out. This was very inappropriate and offensive to us and many others.

Be thankful to have a job

I find it odd that out of all the employees at the Turlock Raley's only five employees felt the need to honor the picket line. In talking to the employees who have decided to stay with Raley's and keep doing their jobs all have said that their wages and benefits are very fair. Everyone that I talked to was disheartened that the union refused to let them vote on the proposed settlement offered by Raley's management.

There are better ways to spend tax payers' money

I have lived in Stanislaus County for about 65 years. I know many residents of Turlock and most of us pay property tax in the mid to high 1,000s because we were thought to have back bone and to work and save and respect our country.

More communication, please

It was quite a surprise when we started getting a lot of kids coming in our (downtown) store looking for their Halloween candy. We were told by the city that there was not going to be anything going on this year. It seems that the powers of city hall don't want to keep the shops informed. I guess we don't count.

Gary Soiseth is a breath of fresh air

My family and I met Gary Soiseth this last Saturday when he walked through my neighborhood in the rain. He spoke about his commitment to a positive campaign without negative attacks against his opponent. He spoke about moving Turlock in an even stronger direction. And he spoke about bringing new energy and new ideas to City Hall. All of which I agree with.

Roman Catholic Bishops support Proposition 47

Proposition 47 is the one proposition on the ballot for which the Roman Catholic Bishops of California have taken a position of support. "The California Safe Neighborhoods Act" is a step forward in reforming the broken criminal justice system in our state. It will provide educational support and treat mental illness to make our communities safer while addressing sentencing discrepancies in constructive ways.

Our community would be fortunate to have Soiseth as Mayor

Gary Soiseth recently volunteered to spend a day speaking with high school students about his experiences in Afghanistan and his commitment to public service. After hearing him speak, I felt that any community would be fortunate to have him as a leader. He is intelligent, well-spoken, and most importantly, he is passionate. As a teacher, I value his desire to help the youth of tomorrow discover their potential, and I applaud his efforts to help them achieve their goals. Gary's ability to connect with the youth of today will help foster the generation of tomorrow.

Turlock leadership choices

Turlock is a community on the move, growing jobs, attracting new economic development and emerging as one of the best places to live and work in the Central Valley. At the core of this success is the recognition that confronting our community's challenges and capitalizing on new opportunities requires a team effort to mobilize our community's assets and the active cooperation of business, civic and political leaders around core objectives. This is why the leadership choices Turlock voters make in November are so important. This is why, after conducting extensive interviews with all the candidates, the Turlock Chamber ...

He is committed to long term solutions regarding drinking and waste water needs of the public and industry, the condition of neighborhood and community roadways, and appropriate staffing of our public safety departments - all within the framework of fiscal responsibility and sustainable growth.

Gary Soiseth for Mayor of Turlock

Turlock has been blessed with many dedicated and talented elected leaders throughout the city's history. Turlock is recognized as a special place to live in large part because of the policies of the past that have shaped the present. To insure a bright and prosperous future Turlock must have a mayor with vision and the strength to make many difficult and informed decisions. On Nov. 4 Turlock voters will consider two very well qualified men seeking this important position.
