City trouble

I have lived in the same home for over 50 years. It was passed down to me by my parents. I have always paid my taxes and tried to be a good neighbor. Now the city has forced me to be homeless.

Future bright for downtown

In her recent editorial, Kristina Hacker asks "whatever happened to Turlock's bridal district?" It is a good question, and in fact, she partially answers it herself. Whether or not the concept was a good idea, the timing could not have been worse. Launched in January 2008 at a time when vacancies downtown were near zero, the Turlock Downtown Property Owner's Association attempted to create a long term vision for downtown to attract new businesses and keep downtown flourishing for years to come.

Freedom of religion ignored in federal health plan mandates

On Friday, January 20, 2012, the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) ruled that virtually all private health plans will be required to include sterilization and contraceptives, including abortion inducing drugs. A very restricted "religious exemption" is granted to religious groups only if they are serving people of the same belief in a very narrow setting such as a parish and employ people of their own faith. Starbucks brightens holiday for hundreds of local foster youth

Thanks to the giving spirit exhibited by Starbucks in the Turlock area, many foster youth in our community have great memories of the 2011 holiday season. Starbucks lent their support to Aspiranet's third annual holiday gift drive, helping us solicit and collect gifts for foster children and families in need during November and December.

Thank you Turlock

On behalf of the Turlock Branch of the American Association of University Women, I want to thank the many businesses in Turlock that contributed to our Wine Event Fundraiser. Thanks to your generous support, we were able to raise $6,000 for educational fellowships, scholarships for local high school students and Tech Trek, a summer camp for middle school girls to encourage their interest in math and science.

Time to take control of maintaining Turlock's roads

The citizens of Turlock will have the opportunity Nov. 4 to make a commitment to fixing Turlock roads by voting YES on Measure B. Turlock roads have suffered from years of neglect as a result of not having a dedicated funding source and it's time that we take control of maintaining our investment in Turlock's transportation infrastructure.
