Zwahlen will fight for Clean Air Act in Congress

I am very concerned about the threat to the Valley's air quality posed by the Trump administration's misguided attempts to abandon vehicle-mileage targets set by the EPA in consultation with California officials.

Christianson, Weidman endorse Dirkse for Sheriff

As the current and former sheriffs of Stanislaus County, we know from personal experience what is required to lead the nearly 700 men and women who work at the Sheriff's Department. In our judgement, there is only one candidate who is eminently qualified and best suited to become the next sheriff - Jeff Dirkse.

There’s one real farmer here

Everyone knows that Jeff Denham isn't a real famer. He's got a nice clean tractor for his signs and a small acre land in Atwater that he leases out. Denham's business isn't farming, it's Denham Plastic. Jeff's farming credentials are as real as plastic fruit.

Zwahlen ideal candidate for U.S. Congress

I fully support the candidacy of Sue Zwahlen to represent our area in the U.S. Congress. I believe that anyone who has worked with Sue, either professionally or through her volunteer work on numerous city and county boards, knows that Sue is highly passionate about service to others. While many know her because of her work as an ER nurse or Modesto City Schools Board member, I know Sue for her outstanding work as a Board member of both the Stanislaus Country Interfaith Council (SCIC) and InterFaith Ministries (IFM). Sue epitomizes reconciliation through her firm stand for religious tolerance ...

Nygard is the right person to represent District 10

We have a chance to send a strong advocate for real people to Congress. Former Riverbank Councilwoman Dotty Nygard RN is running to represent District 10 (you and I) in the US House of Representatives.

We need Denham to step up and keep guns out of bad people’s hands

In school districts throughout our Nation, including Turlock Unified, our 24-year-old first grade teachers straight out of college are having exceptionally courageous conversation with their 6-year-old students. Those conversations include "What are you supposed to do when someone comes through our classroom door with an assault rifle intending to slaughter us all?"

Honored to be a candidate

In response to Angelina Martin's Jan. 17, 2018 article entitled, "Three competing for Stanislaus County Superintendent of Schools," I am honored to be a candidate for Superintendent of Stanislaus County.

Dental gift of love

The United Methodist Women would like to thank the Turlock Dental Arts for providing toothbrushes and toothpaste for our Valentine bags for the 55 men at the We Care emergency shelter. This was the second year that they so graciously provided them. These, along with other personal care items and goodies, were distributed to the shelter residents at the beginning of February. Thank you, Turlock Dental Arts, for your part in this project.

Manmade climate change is real

Dennis Wyatt's editorial of Dec. 16, implying that manmade climate change is a myth, is in conflict with overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary. Although I concur with his assertion that greater limits and restrictions should be imposed on developments in wildfire prone areas, manmade climate change is real and is already having a profound and possibly irreversible impact on our planet.

Small donations can make a big difference

I have heard many suggestions on ways to help the homeless and low-income persons during this holiday season and beyond. One easy way is to go into your closets at home and pull out those usable coats and jackets this winter to help keep the homeless warm this winter.

DUI has no bearing on Bates’ bid for mayoral seat

Ted Howze's vow "to launch a negative ad campaign" if Brad Bates does not withdraw from the mayor's race is disgusting and a repeat of his negative ads when he ran against Brad for the County Supervisor's race in 2004. Does Howze get vicarious satisfaction from writing negative things about others?

Tax plan is bad for hardworking Californians

Congressman Jeff Denham voted for the GOP tax scheme that is being sold as a middle-class tax break, but we know the truth, it's a big giveaway to the ultra-rich. This "so-called" reform plan hurts hardworking middle-class families, all to pad the pockets of the rich.

Why pardon a turkey?

President Trump is getting his pardon pen ready, as the Muller investigation starts indicting his associates. This Wednesday, he plans to practice on two very innocent Minnesota turkeys.
