Teachers not at fault for Denair Unified troubles

The statement made by Denair Unified School District interim superintendent Walt Hanline, displayed on YouTube, regarding a State takeover of the District was dishonest. His political spin was: (1) that the District's present woes are the result of paying its teachers and employees too much; and (2) that these teachers have refused to bargain for less pay to save the District.

Hanline makes costly decisions for school districts, teachers

Walt Hanline, superintendent of Denair (Unified School District) wastes taxpayer money trying to prove that his illegal actions are legal. As Ceres (Unified) superintendent, (Hanline) insisted administrators had the right to change students' grades, during the summer, without permission from teachers who taught the classes. Superior Court Judge Mayhew's ruling forced the district to rescind its policy and reverse the grades of Central Valley High School students. The court battle was costly. Hanline persuaded the Ceres Board that teachers HAD to take an 8.5 percent cut. After he left Ceres, it was revealed that 5 percent would have ...

Young adults need to know responsibilities of being a DD

"Designated driver refers to the selection of a person who remains sober as the responsible driver of a vehicle whilst others have been allowed to drink alcoholic beverages. Thus as a practical and ethical matter, a designated driver is a person who abstains from alcohol on a social occasion in order to drive his or her companions home safely as an alternative to driving under the influence."

Seniors thank community for support

The Turlock Senior Citizens had a very successful "Yard" Sale last week that, because of weather and the generosity of everyone, stayed indoors. Thanks to the community, it was well attended. Many members were very generous with their time to sort, price, and assist with the selling and clean up, making a big job light.

Less literature will not make our students more competitive

Hidden in the political controversy surrounding the Obama administration's Common Core Standards educational program is the fact that students will spend much less time and effort learning about American and English literature. The theory is that students need more practice in "technical-informational" reading to be competitive in the world market.

Medi-Cal reimbursement cuts affect everyone

Columbine, Sandy Hook Elementary, Aurora, Colo. These top headlines are some of the most recent and memorable stories we have seen in the news. But, yet, our government wants to see more!

Sales tax, better workers could fix roads

If we must have a tax to repair the roads in Turlock, then I am in favor of a sales tax increase. This increase needs to affect all, since everyone who drives uses the roads. I just spent $450 to repair a popped tire and a bent spindle in my car from the potholes in the road.

Newsom has always been pro-drugs

The primary goal of drug legalization advocates has been to convince the general public that marijuana is a harmless plant. Of course, they are aware of the fact that so called "medical" marijuana is grossly abused, and store front dispensaries are nothing more than legitimized (Prop 215) drug dealing operations.

Thank you for supporting vets through poppies campaign

Thank you citizens of Turlock and outlying areas for your generous contributions during our poppies for donations campaign May 1 through 31. As usual, your generosity was outstanding. It is only through your help that we are able to use this money exclusively for the benefit of veterans and their families. Be assured that this money will be spend wisely.

Soiseth is wrong on Measure B

I was disappointed to learn of Gary Soiseth's opposition to Measure B - the proposed half-cent sales tax dedicated to fixing Turlock roads. However, my disappointment quickly turned to frustration as I read Soiseth's rational for opposing Measure B.

Brem much more qualified to be our mayor

Gary Soiseth is a really nice young man, but he has very little experience or involvement with the City of Turlock and only recently became a resident. Mike Brem has been a resident for over 20 years, he is a proven business leader - as the CEO of a very successful local business with over 100 employees, he has served in leadership roles with the Chamber of Commerce, is a longtime member and past president of Turlock Rotary, and has been a member of the city's planning commission for many years. Mike is very familiar with Turlock's unique needs ...
