Accolades for Senator's help

Dear Editor: We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Senator Dave Cogdill for his leadership in getting SB 85 passed in the State legislature and signed by the governor. It was a Herculean effort to get this legislation signed and he has accomplished what no one had been able to do before. Over the past 20 years, many bills have been authored, but any bill that had made it to the governor had ...

Stadium blighted, neighborhood not

Turlock high school has been there for 100 years. It was there when you and I bought our houses. Though the neighborhood is not blighted, the stadium's field and track are! I not only live near it (3 blocks away) but taught health and P.E. there for 20 years.

Continue progress with Christianson

I encourage you to join me in supporting Adam Christianson in his re-election bid for sheriff of Stanislaus County. In these fiscally challenging times, we need continued proactive leadership in this important office. With the crime rate at its lowest in two decades, coupled with an aggressive and successful rural crime prevention program, and an effective focus on gang activity suppression, Adam and his department have proven themselves worthy of our confidence. Strong leadership and ...

Are stadium renovations really the best use of funds?

There is a lot of unfair criticism pointed at those opposed to the remodeling of Joe Debely Stadium. Both of my sons played on that field in high school, and even then it was in need of repair. Nobody wants to see an athlete get hurt due to poor field quality and no parents want to continue sitting on those cold metal bleachers in the middle of a chilly November evening.

Joe Debely renovations benefit entire community

The Turlock High School Joe Debely Stadium renovation appears to have brought a lot of negativity to the school, the City Council, and those who support the renovation. The Turlock Unified School Board is always concerned about its neighbors and their needs. They pride themselves in maintaining good relationships with our community and have repeatedly voiced their willingness to address any and all issues with regard to the stadium improvements.

Family is grateful for support of community

On Oct. 27, 2009 at approximately 3:30 a.m., our home and our belongings were lost in a fire. First and foremost we would like to thank our Heavenly Father for waking our mom (Shana) up that morning and giving us the chance to live! We, the Jones family, would like to express how thankful we are to each and every person who helped us pick up the pieces to our lives and put them back ...

EDITOR’S NOTE

In a letter to the editor titled "Council members need lesson in civility" that ran in the Feb. 13 issue of the Journal, Dale Parkinson wrote: "Councilmember Kurt Spycher casually said that (City of Turlock Economic Development Manager Heidi McNally-Dial's) position on the city staff would be eliminated and then Councilmember Ted Howze agreed."

Spycher and Howze were out of line

I couldn't agree more with Dale Parkinson's comments in his letter to the editor published in the Feb. 13 Turlock Journal.

Sportsmanship lacking at TC basketball game

I have been involved in high school athletics for many years; I have played in them and I have cheered from the sidelines. After the Turlock Christian/Denair game that I just attended, I have almost lost all faith in the sportsmanship that used to be held at such a high standard at all high school athletic contests.

Using RDA funds for stadium renovations is wrong

Dear Editor, The Turlock City Council is giving Redevelopment Agency money to the Turlock School District. The community members who filed the lawsuit want Turlock citizens to know we believe this RDA project is against RDA and state law. The neighborhoods around the high school are not blighted, the Joe Debely Stadium at the high school is not inside the RDA boundary, the project has not gone through an environmental impact report and City Council ...

Obama is on the right track

I believe that President Barack Obama is on the right track with focusing on job creation. I think helping small businesses with giving small banks the incentive to give loans and the tax credits to businesses who hire new workers or give them raises is a step in the right direction.

Making every woman count

Dear Editor, On Jan. 1, the Every Woman Counts program, which provides mammograms to 350,000 underserved women in California each year, closed its doors and will not start screening women again until July. When the program reopens, women under the age 50 will not be served. Why? To save a few bucks, just one half of one percent... which will have little impact on the state's massive budget deficit. For the women of this state ...

What are our schools coming to?

My grandson was shot with an Air Soft gun by two other students in his grade after school at Brown Elementary. He was not injured. He asked to please not shoot his little sister.

Local jails cannot bear burden of housing state prison inmates

California's budget crisis has impacted every level of government: State, county, and city. Painful cuts have been and will continue to be made in all areas. Inevitably up and down the state, counties and local governments are looking at another year of reduced budgets and additional cuts to the point that many police chiefs and sheriffs are being forced to lay off police officers and deputy sheriffs.

Vote count matters in school board vacancy

Dear Editor, Lori Crivelli has become Turlock's own Sarah Palin. Seek and accept an office of responsibility and then quit without a rational explanation. The remaining members of the Turlock Unified School District Board of Trustees have correctly decided to use appointment rather than special election to fill the vacancy. I agree with those who say that the person who earned the next highest number of votes in the election should receive the appointment if ...

Libraries important resource for adults, children

I am writing you in support of the Hilmar Library and all that it has to offer to the community. It is important to stop the reduction of hours and possible future closure of the Hilmar Library.

Vote ‘yes’ for libraries

It is very disheartening to read the Turlock Journal article, "Save our library," that ran on July 13. The news item announced that because of budget cuts further reductions were necessary in the Hilmar and Merced County area. The Hilmar library would be open only 20 hours a week, down from 32 hours a week last fall.

Fireworks should be seen, not heard

I enjoy fireworks as much as anyone else. However, fireworks should be "visual!" What I am against is the purchase of fireworks with the "big bang" noise that sounds like a military assault.

School cuts should start at the top

We went to our grandson's promotion from 8th grade at the Turlock Jr. High School (TJHS). The principal was speaking and introducing several people. The one that really got my attention was the introduction of his three vice principals. Why in the world does he need three vice principals for two grades?

Supervisors should support sheriff

I am appalled at the lack of support members of our County Board of Supervisors are offering Sheriff Adam Christianson. They are well aware that in order for the Sheriff to run his department efficiently he must have adequate funding. Without that basic level of support, his job is much, much harder. If the department was adequately funded, he would have the ability to delegate supervisory ...

Trust and confidence

Recently, law enforcement in our county has experienced a number of instances where law enforcement officers have made poor choices, violating their oath of office and the values and principles we pride ourselves on as a profession. Some have made mistakes that compromise their personal integrity and perhaps, your trust. While these cases are tragic within their own right, they do not represent the vast majority ...

Despite recent reports, Denair very patriotic

The Denair First Amendment issue does not want to go away. The good that came out of the incident, the reaffirmation by the district that students have a civil right to fly a flag at school was tainted by a recent district memo which seemed to deny responsibility for the situation.
