Josh Bernard has the skills needed to lead Turlock schools
A good public education system is one of our country's great strengths. Unfortunately, I do not believe today's public education is as good as it once was or as good as it should be. There are many reasons for this and many are beyond local control. However, a reason some districts excel over other districts is undoubtedly the leadership, dedication and knowledge of their school boards.

Bovine bologna
The recommendations in last week's H1N1 article are irresponsible, inaccurate and dangerous. According to the Physician's Desk Reference, the nasal influenza vaccine is associated with an increased risk of "Medically Attended Events," seen as asthma/reactive airway disease, in children under the age of 5 years.

America's preoccupation with reforming health care is misguided and futile. Social medicine by any name or statute is designed to make medical care more available to more people.

Why is trash still expensive in Turlock?
Turlock Scavenger Company gets (the) bid to take over waste management garbage routes in unincorporated areas. These unincorporated area residents get a lowed monthly rate. Can you believe it? Their rate (of) $20.92 (falls) to $18.65, that's a savings of $2.27.
Bus routes important to all
Recently some of us who are dissatisfied with the local bus system went to Mr. (Roger) Fall, who manages the bus routes, and asked him to change the routes. He did not make a definite commitment, but he called two meetings on Sept. 23 at which time residents may air their grievances.
The Christian majority should be heard
As I picked up the Turlock Journal Wednesday morning, the first thing that caught my eye was an article entitled "In God We Trust?" With great interest I opened up the newspaper and read the article and my heart sank.
We need to remember
Thank you so much for bringing the sad fact that there are no Sept. 11 remembrance events held in town to the attention of the citizens of Turlock. For years I have been asking why the schools have done nothing on the anniversary of 9-11 every year. For the first couple of years I even tried calling my sons' school (Pitman) and told them how disappointed I was and asked them to please consider changing their "same as any other day" attitude.
A different look at Turlock politics
Dear Editor, This is what I see is going on behind the scenes in Turlock politics: 1. Mary Jackson asked "out-of-town developer" Mark Hall for the same campaign money he gave Amy Bublak and Kurt Vander Weide in the 2008 City Council elections. The tragedy of drunk driving
As long as I've been a police officer, I've never gotten used to the sorrow I feel when I'm called to the scene of a crash where a young person has died due to impaired driving. Yet, this senseless loss of human life is a daily reality all over America - year after year.

Libraries important resource for adults, children
I am writing you in support of the Hilmar Library and all that it has to offer to the community. It is important to stop the reduction of hours and possible future closure of the Hilmar Library.
Vote ‘yes’ for libraries
It is very disheartening to read the Turlock Journal article, "Save our library," that ran on July 13. The news item announced that because of budget cuts further reductions were necessary in the Hilmar and Merced County area. The Hilmar library would be open only 20 hours a week, down from 32 hours a week last fall.
Fireworks should be seen, not heard
I enjoy fireworks as much as anyone else. However, fireworks should be "visual!" What I am against is the purchase of fireworks with the "big bang" noise that sounds like a military assault.

We went to our grandson's promotion from 8th grade at the Turlock Jr. High School (TJHS). The principal was speaking and introducing several people. Despite recent reports, Denair very patriotic
The Denair First Amendment issue does not want to go away. The good that came out of the incident, the reaffirmation by the district that students have a civil right to fly a flag at school was tainted by a recent district memo which seemed to deny responsibility for the situation.
