Ralph Gonzales has been long distance running for roughly 20 years, covering ground at marathons in Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, New York and more. He's see the country through runner's eyes, but on July 9 his passion turned international when he embarked on what many consider to be the biggest challenge for a runner - the Inca Trail Marathon in Peru.
Disappointment comes in many forms, but for Brandon Bettencourt it came in the form of a dislocated shoulder a little over three years ago. For the first time in nine years, the Stanislaus U18 Babe Ruth Cardinals will not be vying for the Central California State Tournament championship. Bonding and helping voluntarily are not activities that are typically associated with athletic opponents, but for Valley wrestlers it has become a summer time tradition. Though they face off against each other through league and into the postseason, Central California Conference wrestlers - and those from surrounding leagues - have been coming together to help each other stay sharp on the mat for weekly match nights, the last of which was held on Wednesday at Turlock High.
The beginning of the 2015 high school football season is roughly three months away, but preparation has already begun for local teams who are shaking the rust and acclimating new varsity players through seven-on-seven scrimmages.
The U13 Rage Volleyball squad was led by two soon-to-be Hilmar High Yellowjackets, as they sent their youngest team of five to the USA Junior National American Championships which took place at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center this past weekend and concluded on Monday.
John Cook won back-to-back California Collegiate Athletic Association championships as California State University, Stanislaus' men's golf coach and earned four CCAA Coach of the Year awards during his seven years with the Warriors, so it came as no surprise when the University of Pacific offered him the position as the Tigers' men's golf head coach.
